How to understand God's messages today?
How can we discern and interpret God's messages in our lives today?

Setting the Scene

Daniel 5 describes a spectacular moment: a disembodied hand writes on Belshazzar’s palace wall. None of the king’s wise men can decipher it, so Daniel is summoned. Verse 16 records the king’s request:

“But I have heard that you can give interpretations and solve enigmas. Now if you can read the writing and give me its interpretation, you will be clothed in purple, wear a gold chain around your neck, and be given the third highest position in the kingdom.”

Belshazzar’s desperation highlights two timeless truths: God still speaks, and human wisdom alone cannot decode His messages. Daniel models the attitude and methods we need today to discern and interpret what God is saying.

Why Daniel Could Hear God

• Consistent devotion (Daniel 6:10)

• Reverence for God’s written word already revealed through Moses and the prophets

• Refusal to compromise with pagan culture (Daniel 1:8)

• Humility—he declined Belshazzar’s rewards (Daniel 5:17)

These qualities form the backbone of godly discernment in any generation.

God’s Primary Communication Channel: Scripture

• “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Hebrews 1:1-2 reminds us that in these last days God has spoken to us by His Son; the Bible records that definitive revelation.

Psalm 119:105—God’s Word is our lamp; every inner prompting, dream, or circumstance must be weighed against it.

Practical takeaway: If a message contradicts the plain meaning of Scripture, discard it immediately.

The Spirit Who Illuminates

John 16:13—“When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.”

1 Corinthians 2:10-12—The Spirit searches and reveals the deep things of God.

James 1:5—God gives wisdom generously to those who ask.

Ask, listen, and allow the Spirit to connect God’s Word with your situation, just as He enabled Daniel to read the mysterious writing.

Time-Tested Steps for Discerning God’s Messages

1. Open the Bible first. Let God speak through what He has already written.

2. Pray for illumination; surrender any desired outcome.

3. Compare impressions or counsel with Scripture’s clear teaching.

4. Seek confirmation through:

• The peace of the Holy Spirit (Colossians 3:15)

• Godly mentors (Proverbs 15:22)

• Consistent circumstances that align with biblical principles

5. Act in obedience. Understanding increases with each step of faith (John 7:17).

Tools Daniel Used—And We Can Too

• Word-Focused Meditation: rehearse passages until they shape your thinking.

• Fasting: Daniel 9 shows fasting sharpened his spiritual perception.

• Corporate Wisdom: even Daniel later shared visions with companions (Daniel 2:17-18).

• Holy Boldness: once clear, speak and live the message, regardless of reward or risk.

Red Flags to Watch For

• Messages that appeal to fleshly desires (Galatians 5:16-17)

• Flattery or promises of quick promotion at the expense of righteousness—note Belshazzar’s offer in Daniel 5:16 versus Daniel’s refusal (v. 17)

• Anything that diminishes Christ’s supremacy (Colossians 1:18)

• Prophecies that consistently fail Deuteronomy 18:21-22’s accuracy test

Encouragement for Today

The same God who wrote on Belshazzar’s wall has inscribed His truth in the Bible and sealed it in our hearts by the Spirit (2 Corinthians 1:22). Stay anchored in His Word, cultivate Daniel-like faithfulness, and you will recognize His voice amidst the noise of modern life.
