How can we actively walk in the "good works" mentioned in Ephesians 2:10? Our Foundation: God’s Workmanship • “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.” (Ephesians 2:10) • Good works are not an afterthought; they are the pathway God already mapped out for every believer. • Because Scripture is fully trustworthy, we take this verse at face value: we really are designed, in Christ, for a lifestyle of visible, practical righteousness. Staying Connected to the Source • John 15:5—“I am the vine, you are the branches…apart from Me you can do nothing.” – Daily fellowship with Christ through the Word and prayer keeps the life-sap flowing so good works are Spirit-powered, not self-powered. • Galatians 5:22–23—The fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, etc.) describes the character that produces lasting good works. Letting Light Shine Publicly • Matthew 5:16—“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Good works are meant to be observable, pointing people upward, not toward our own reputation. • Colossians 3:17—Whatever you do, big or small, do it “in the name of the Lord Jesus.” – Mundane tasks done with Christ-honoring motives become acts of worship. Serving Through Our Gifts • 1 Peter 4:10—Use the gifts you have “to serve one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” • Romans 12:6-8—Prophecy, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, showing mercy—identify yours and put them into action in the local church and community. • Titus 2:14—Christ redeemed us so we’d be “zealous for good deeds,” not casual about them. Practicing Everyday Obedience • Micah 6:8—Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly with God. – Fair business dealings, generous tipping, truthful speech, compassionate listening—simple obedience showcases Christ. • James 2:17—“Faith by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead.” – Look for immediate, tangible steps: reconciling with a neighbor, volunteering where needs are obvious, contributing financially to gospel work. Planning to Walk, Not Sprint • Ephesians 5:15-16—“Be very careful how you live…making the most of every opportunity.” – Schedule good works: block time to visit the sick, mentor youth, or participate in outreach. – Keep margin in your calendar so you can respond to Spirit-prompted interruptions. Cultivating a Lifestyle of Worshipful Work 1. Start your day submitting your schedule to the Lord. 2. Ask, “Which good works are already on my path today?” (family chores, job tasks, errands). 3. Keep Scripture in view—post verses where you’ll see them. 4. Remain sensitive to the Spirit’s nudges—He aligns us with the works “prepared in advance.” 5. End the day with gratitude, noting where God enabled obedience and planning adjustments for tomorrow. Anticipating Eternal Impact • 1 Corinthians 15:58—“Be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” • Every Spirit-empowered good work echoes into eternity, bringing glory to God and confirming the authenticity of our faith here and now. |
