Identify & honor God's servants?
How can we recognize and respond to God's "servants" in our lives?

Key Verse

“Now we ask you, brothers, to acknowledge those who work among you, who preside over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

Setting the Scene

Paul writes to believers in Thessalonica, urging them to recognize and honor those who labor spiritually among them. The Holy Spirit preserved this instruction so we, too, will discern and respond rightly to God-appointed servants in our own lives.

Recognizing God’s Servants

• They “work among you” – consistent, visible commitment to the local body

• They “preside over you in the Lord” – carry God-given authority, yet submit to Christ’s headship (Hebrews 13:17)

• They “admonish you” – lovingly correct, warn, and direct according to Scripture (2 Timothy 4:2)

• Their character aligns with 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9 – above reproach, spiritually mature, servant-hearted

• The fruit of the Spirit marks their lives (Galatians 5:22-23), confirming genuine calling

Responding to God’s Servants

1. Acknowledge them

‑ Notice their labor; speak gratitude; refuse apathy.

2. Esteem them “very highly in love”

‑ Honor flows from affection, not mere duty (Romans 12:10).

3. Support their work

‑ Pray (Ephesians 6:19), give materially (Galatians 6:6), volunteer your gifts (1 Peter 4:10).

4. Receive their admonition

‑ Humbly submit to biblical correction (Proverbs 9:8-9).

5. Maintain peace

‑ Avoid gossip, factions, or undermining leadership (James 3:16).

6. Test everything by Scripture

‑ Affirm loyalty to Christ first (Acts 17:11; 1 John 4:1). Genuine servants welcome accountability.

Practical Takeaways

• Make a habit of verbal encouragement—write a note, send a text, or speak face to face.

• Schedule regular intercession for pastors, teachers, missionaries, and mentors.

• Evaluate your heart: Are you resisting biblical counsel out of pride? Confess and realign.

• Contribute time or resources to lighten their load—childcare, meals, administrative help, facility upkeep.

• Cultivate unity by refusing to entertain critical, unverified complaints about church leaders.
