Identify & respect God's servants today?
How can we identify and respect God's "servants" in our lives today?

Key Passage: 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

“ But we ask you, brothers, to acknowledge those who work among you, who preside over you in the Lord, and instruct you, and esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another.”

Recognizing God’s Servants

• They work hard “among you” – their service is visible and consistent, not distant or occasional.

• They “preside over you in the Lord” – God has entrusted them with real spiritual oversight.

• They “instruct” or “admonish” – they open Scripture, correct error, and encourage obedience.

• Their character aligns with 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:6-9 – above reproach, humble, hospitable, self-controlled.

• Their fruit shows up in changed lives (Matthew 7:17-18).

Biblical Examples of Today’s Servants

• Pastors, elders, and deacons (1 Timothy 5:17).

• Small-group leaders or teachers who faithfully handle the Word (James 3:1).

• Parents bringing children up “in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).

• Mentors who disciple one-on-one (2 Timothy 2:2).

• Governing authorities when they act as “God’s servant for your good” (Romans 13:1-4).

Why Honor Matters

• God appoints them; to honor them is to honor His choice (John 13:20).

• They “watch over your souls as those who must give an account” (Hebrews 13:17).

• Honoring nurtures unity: “Live in peace with one another” (1 Thessalonians 5:13).

• It frees them to lead with joy, which benefits the whole body (Hebrews 13:17).

Practical Expressions of Respect

• Pray for them regularly (Colossians 4:3-4).

• Listen with an open Bible and a teachable spirit (Acts 17:11).

• Offer sincere encouragement—spoken, written, or texted (Proverbs 16:24).

• Share material support: “The one who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor” (Galatians 6:6; cf. 1 Timothy 5:18).

• Guard their reputation by refusing gossip and slander (Proverbs 17:9).

• Follow their lead when it aligns with Scripture (Hebrews 13:17).

Guardrails: Honoring Without Idolizing

• Test every teaching against Scripture (1 John 4:1).

• Remember all servants are fellow laborers—only God gives the growth (1 Corinthians 3:5-7).

• Hold leaders accountable in love when necessary (Galatians 2:11-14; Matthew 18:15).

• Keep your ultimate allegiance to Christ alone (Colossians 1:18).

Putting It Into Action

• Identify at least two servants God is using in your life.

• Express heartfelt gratitude today.

• Commit to intercede for them this week.

• Look for concrete ways to lighten their load—volunteer, give, or speak up in their defense.

What does the servant's mistreatment reveal about human rejection of God's messengers?
