How can we identify and support godly leaders in our communities today? The Lord Appoints Leaders by Name “and from the tribe of Manasseh He appointed Hanniel son of Ephod.” (Numbers 34:23) • In a long list of tribal representatives, the Spirit singles out each man “by name.” God’s people did not vote, campaign, or draw lots—He identified trustworthy stewards to distribute the inheritance. • The pattern is clear: the Lord Himself raises up leaders, then calls the community to recognize and cooperate with them (cf. Numbers 34:17-18). Traits Worth Seeking in Today’s Leaders Scripture supplies a consistent portrait: • Reverence for God – “men who fear God” (Exodus 18:21). • Spirit-filled wisdom – “full of the Spirit and wisdom” (Acts 6:3). • Proven faithfulness at home – “managing his own household well” (1 Timothy 3:4). • Integrity with resources – “not greedy for money” (Titus 1:7). • Gentle shepherd hearts – “not lording it over those entrusted to you” (1 Peter 5:3). • Transparent, tested character – “above reproach” (1 Timothy 3:2). These qualities, not charisma or popularity, mark a person as Hanniel-like—ready to handle the family inheritance. Confirming the Call A biblical process helps keep discernment grounded: 1. Observation: watch lives over time (1 Timothy 5:22). 2. Community affirmation: “Select from among you” (Acts 6:3). 3. Agreement with existing leaders: Moses, Eleazar, and Joshua all approved the tribal appointees (Numbers 34:17-19). 4. Public commissioning: laying on of hands or formal acknowledgment (Acts 13:3). 5. Ongoing accountability: leaders remain servants, answerable to God and His people (Hebrews 13:17). Practical Ways to Support Those God Gives Us • Pray consistently—“intercessions…for all who are in authority” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). • Speak encouragement—“esteem them very highly in love because of their work” (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13). • Provide material help—“The worker is worthy of his wages” (1 Timothy 5:18). • Stand with them publicly when they take righteous stands (2 Timothy 1:8). • Guard their reputation; refuse gossip (Proverbs 17:9). • Offer constructive counsel in private when needed (Galatians 6:1). • Share the load—volunteer, serve, give, so leaders can focus on their God-given tasks (Acts 6:4). Building a Culture That Welcomes Godly Leadership • Teach biblical qualifications regularly so expectations stay scriptural, not cultural. • Celebrate servant leadership stories—highlight faithfulness, not flash. • Mentor emerging leaders early (2 Timothy 2:2). • Keep succession in view; Moses prepared Joshua long before his own departure. • Maintain corporate humility—leaders and laity alike submit to Christ, the “Chief Shepherd” (1 Peter 5:4). Step Forward in Faith God still appoints “Hanniels” for every tribe, neighborhood, and congregation. As we identify those who match His criteria and actively uphold them, our communities receive their spiritual inheritance without delay or dispute—and the Lord’s name is honored. |
