How can we invite the Holy Spirit to "breathe" life into our lives? Key Verse “ And having said this, He breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’ ” (John 20:22) The Breath Image in Scripture • Genesis 2:7 – God “breathed” into Adam; physical life began. • Ezekiel 37:5 – “I will cause breath to enter you, and you will live”; God revives what is dead. • Acts 2:2–4 – A rushing wind fills the room; the Spirit empowers the church. The same divine breath that formed humanity and revived dry bones is offered to every believer today. Why We Need the Spirit’s Breath • On our own, we are spiritually lifeless (Ephesians 2:1). • The Spirit animates, enlightens, and empowers (Romans 8:11). • His presence turns duty into delight and weakness into strength (Galatians 5:22-23; 2 Timothy 1:7). Opening the Windows of the Soul 1. Receive the Son’s Word • Jesus speaks, then breathes (John 20:22). • Cherish Scripture daily; the Spirit wrote it (2 Peter 1:21) and uses it to breathe life into us. 2. Yield in Repentant Faith • Confession clears the airway (1 John 1:9). • Surrender every known area; the Spirit fills what is fully yielded (Romans 12:1). 3. Ask with Expectant Trust • Luke 11:13 promises the Father gives the Spirit to those who ask. • Simple, believing request invites His empowering presence. 4. Abide in Worshipful Awareness • Ephesians 5:18-19 links being “filled with the Spirit” to psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. • Continual worship keeps the heart oxygen-rich with His life. 5. Walk in Obedience • Acts 5:32 – God gives the Spirit “to those who obey Him.” • Each obedient step opens another chamber for His breath to flow. Living Continually Spirit-Breathed • Stay connected: ongoing fellowship (2 Corinthians 13:14). • Guard purity: avoid quenching or grieving Him (1 Thessalonians 5:19; Ephesians 4:30). • Serve boldly: the Spirit is given for witness and ministry (Acts 1:8; 1 Peter 4:10-11). • Expect renewal: He refreshes day by day, even when the outer self fades (2 Corinthians 4:16). Closing Encouragement The Lord who once breathed on His disciples stands ready to breathe on you. Open His Word, bow your heart, ask in faith, and step forward in obedience. His life-giving Spirit will fill your lungs with fresh grace for every moment. |
