Ittai's loyalty mirrors Christ's call?
How does Ittai's loyalty reflect Christ's call to follow Him?

The Passage

“But the king said to Ittai the Gittite, ‘Why should you go with us? Go back and stay with the new king, since you are a foreigner and an exile from your homeland.’” (2 Samuel 15:19)

Setting the Scene

• David is fleeing Jerusalem during Absalom’s rebellion.

• Ittai the Gittite is a newcomer from Philistine Gath—an outsider with only recently enlisted men (15:20).

• David graciously releases him from any obligation, yet Ittai chooses to stay.

Ittai’s Unswerving Devotion

• Voluntary – no coercion, only love and loyalty (15:21).

• Costly – he embraces David’s uncertain future: “whether in death or life.”

• Public – he declares allegiance before soldiers and citizens.

• Contagious – his 600 men follow his lead (15:22).

Echoes of Christ’s Call to Discipleship

1. Leaving the old allegiance

• Ittai walks away from safety in Jerusalem.

• Jesus calls us to forsake former ties when they clash with His kingdom (Luke 14:26).

2. Bearing the cost

• Ittai pledges to share David’s fate, life or death.

• Christ says, “If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily” (Luke 9:23).

3. Following a rejected king

• David is a king in exile; Ittai identifies with him outside the city.

• Jesus suffered “outside the gate” (Hebrews 13:12–13), and believers are invited to go to Him there.

4. Motivated by covenant faithfulness

• Ittai appeals to “the LORD” (15:21), grounding loyalty in God’s steadfast love.

• Our devotion rests on Christ’s prior love for us (1 John 4:19).

5. Promised Presence

• Ittai: “wherever my lord the king may be, there your servant will be.”

• Jesus: “Where I am, there My servant will be also” (John 12:26).

Supporting Scriptures

Matthew 8:19-22—following Jesus above personal comfort.

John 6:68—Peter’s confession mirrors Ittai’s: “Lord, to whom shall we go?”

1 Peter 2:11—believers are “foreigners and exiles,” just as Ittai was.

Revelation 14:4—the redeemed “follow the Lamb wherever He goes.”

Practical Takeaways

• Choose allegiance to Christ even when culture offers easier paths.

• Expect that following Him may mean embracing uncertainty and sacrifice.

• Ground loyalty not in circumstance but in the unchanging character of God.

• Remember that our identity as “foreigners and exiles” frees us to cling to the true King.
