Jeremiah 35:2: Commit to God?
How does Jeremiah 35:2 challenge us to uphold our commitments to God?

Setting the Scene

“Go to the house of the Rechabites and invite them to come to one of the rooms of the house of the LORD and offer them a drink of wine.” (Jeremiah 35:2)

Who Were the Rechabites?

• A clan descended from Jonadab son of Rechab (2 Kings 10:15–23).

• Nomadic, metal-working people who chose a simple life—no houses, fields, or vineyards (Jeremiah 35:6–7).

• Bound by a family vow: “You and your descendants must never drink wine.”

An Unlikely Command

• God tells Jeremiah to tempt them with the very thing they have sworn off.

• The event takes place “in the house of the LORD,” adding weight to the test.

• Their steadfast refusal (Jeremiah 35:6) becomes a living parable, contrasting Judah’s wavering obedience.

Lessons on Commitment

• God sometimes highlights faithfulness through a test, not to trip us up but to reveal integrity (cf. Genesis 22:1–12).

• The Rechabites did not negotiate, delay, or seek loopholes—“so we obeyed” (Jeremiah 35:8).

• True commitment is maintained in public and under pressure.

• Obedience to earthly authority (their ancestor) shamed Judah’s disobedience to divine authority (Jeremiah 35:14–16).

Scriptural Echoes

Psalm 15:4b: “He keeps his oath even when it hurts.”

Ecclesiastes 5:4: “When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it.”

Matthew 5:37; James 5:12: Our “yes” and “no” are to be trustworthy.

1 Samuel 15:22: “To obey is better than sacrifice.”

Applications for Us Today

• Review our own pledges—baptismal vows, marriage covenants, church responsibilities, private resolutions.

• Guard against gradual compromise; the Rechabites had kept their oath for centuries.

• Remember that faithfulness to God’s Word outshines culture’s expectations.

• Recognize that consistent obedience becomes a witness God can use to convict and inspire others.

• Trust that “the eyes of the LORD roam to and fro…to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is fully devoted to Him” (2 Chronicles 16:9).

Jeremiah 35:2 shows that even a simple command—“offer them wine”—can expose the depth of loyalty in a heart. May our commitments to God stand just as firm, whether in quiet rooms or under public scrutiny.

In what ways can we apply the Rechabites' example of discipline today?
