John 2:3: Seek Jesus in need?
What does John 2:3 teach about seeking Jesus in times of need?

Setting the scene

“When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to Him, ‘They have no more wine.’” (John 2:3)

What we notice right away

• A quiet crisis: the wedding celebration grinds to a halt without wine.

• Mary turns straight to Jesus—not to the master of the banquet, not to the servants.

• She states the need plainly; she does not prescribe the solution.

Why Mary’s approach matters

• Confidence in His care — She is sure He will be concerned about the lack (cf. 1 Peter 5:7).

• Confidence in His power — She believes He can act even though there is no precedent for a miracle yet recorded (cf. Psalm 62:8).

• Confidence without control — She leaves the “how” entirely to Him, modeling humble surrender (cf. Philippians 4:6).

Practical take-aways for our own moments of need

• Go to Jesus first. The wedding party had other options, but Mary chose the sure One.

• Speak honestly but briefly. A simple statement—“They have no more wine”—was enough; flowery prayers are unnecessary (Matthew 6:7-8).

• Trust Him to choose the method and timing. She did not instruct, bargain, or worry; she simply reported the lack.

• Believe He cares about everyday problems, not just emergencies. Running out of wine feels small compared to sickness or danger, yet Jesus still answers (Luke 12:6-7).

• Expect abundance, not mere survival. He will turn water into superior wine, showing that His help exceeds our expectations (Ephesians 3:20).

Other Scriptures that echo the same invitation

• “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor Me.” (Psalm 50:15)

• “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)

• “Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge.” (Psalm 62:8)

Living it out today

• Start every concern by bringing it to Jesus, however small.

• Replace anxious “what if” thoughts with a simple “Lord, here is the need.”

• Watch expectantly for His response, knowing it will be wiser and richer than anything you could script.

How can we apply Mary's faith in Jesus to our daily challenges?
