Lessons from Achsah's prayer request?
What can we learn from Achsah's request for blessings in our prayer life?

Setting the Scene—Achsah’s Bold Moment

Judges 1:14 records: “One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, ‘What do you desire?’”

Joshua 15:19 continues: “She replied, ‘Give me a blessing. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.’ So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.”

Lessons From Achsah’s Request

• Courage to Speak Up

– Achsah approached Caleb directly; she did not remain silent about a pressing need.

Hebrews 4:16: “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence…”

• Asking for More than Survival

– The arid Negev land alone was not enough; without water it would wither.

John 10:10 reminds that Christ came so we might have life “more abundantly.”

• Specificity in Prayer

– She named exactly what she lacked: “springs of water.”

Philippians 4:6 encourages presenting “your requests to God” rather than vague wishes.

• Confidence Rooted in Relationship

– Caleb was her father; she trusted his generosity.

Matthew 7:11: “How much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”

• Dependence on Living Water

– Physical springs point to the spiritual “living water” Christ offers (John 4:14; John 7:37-38).

– Our prayer life should thirst for Him first, then expect earthly provision as He wills (Psalm 42:1-2).

• Receiving Abundantly

– Caleb granted both upper and lower springs—more than she named.

Ephesians 3:20: God “is able to do infinitely more than all we ask or imagine.”

Putting It Into Practice

1. Come boldly—speak openly with the Father about real needs.

2. Identify the true lack—name the “springs” you’re missing, not just the “field” you already have.

3. Anchor every request in relationship—remember you’re a child appealing to a generous Father.

4. Prioritize the living water of Christ—seek spiritual fullness first; material blessings follow in His timing.

5. Expect God’s “upper and lower springs”—trust Him to exceed what faithful, obedient hearts dare to ask.
