Lessons from Elisha on trusting God?
What can we learn from Elisha's actions about trusting God's plans?

Context snapshot

The king of Aram sent a great force to seize Elisha at Dothan. The prophet’s servant panicked, but Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes that he may see,” and the servant glimpsed the fiery army of heaven (2 Kings 6:16-17). Afterward Elisha prayed again and the enemy soldiers were struck with blindness. Then comes the key moment:

Key verse

“Then Elisha told them, ‘This is not the way or the city. Follow me, and I will lead you to the man you seek.’ And he led them to Samaria.” (2 Kings 6:19)

Observations on Elisha’s trust

• Confidence in God’s unseen provision – Elisha never panicked because he knew the LORD’s hosts were present though invisible (cf. Psalm 34:7).

• Readiness to obey in the moment – He didn’t hesitate to act when God gave the strategy.

• Creative, fearless leadership – Guiding a hostile army straight into Israel’s capital would have sounded reckless to natural reasoning, yet it was precisely God’s plan.

• Merciful motive – Instead of slaughtering the blinded troops, Elisha ultimately arranged for them to be fed and released (vv. 22-23). God’s plan combined justice with unexpected grace.

• Awareness of the bigger picture – By trusting God’s approach, Elisha turned an immediate threat into a longer-term cessation of raids (v. 23b).

Principles for our own trust

• God sees what we cannot; therefore, we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).

• Obedience sometimes looks illogical at ground level, but it aligns with God’s higher ways (Isaiah 55:8-9).

• The Lord may use unconventional means—blinding, redirecting, feeding an enemy—to fulfill His purposes; our task is to follow His lead.

• Trust involves both courage and compassion. God’s solutions often display His character of truth and loving-kindness together (Psalm 85:10).

• When God directs, outcome is His responsibility; our responsibility is fidelity (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Supporting scriptures

2 Kings 6:16 – “Do not be afraid,” Elisha answered, “for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

Romans 8:28 – “And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him…”

Psalm 37:5 – “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will do it.”

Proverbs 16:9 – “A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.”

Living it out today

• When faced with intimidating circumstances, pause to remember the unseen resources God has promised.

• Seek His specific direction through Scripture and prayer; expect it to guide tangible choices.

• Choose obedience even if the path defies conventional logic.

• Leave room for God to manifest mercy through you, especially toward those who oppose you.

• Rest in confidence that every step surrendered to His plan weaves into a larger tapestry of His glory and our ultimate good.
