Lessons from Jael: courage & obedience?
What can we learn from Jael's actions about courage and obedience to God?

The Setting Nobody Expected

Judges 4:17: “Meanwhile, Sisera fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.”

Sisera thinks he has found sanctuary; God has already appointed his downfall.

Courage That Rises in the Moment

• Jael steps forward when no one else is present.

• She welcomes Sisera into her tent, a space culturally ruled by hospitality, then boldly subordinates custom to God’s greater purpose (vv. 18-21).

• Her act mirrors Joshua 1:9—“Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid…”—but moves the command from battlefield to household.

• Like David facing Goliath (1 Samuel 17:45-47), Jael trusts the Lord to deliver the enemy into her hands.

Obedience Before Personal Alliances

• Peace existed between Heber’s house and Jabin (v. 17). Jael honors God above political convenience.

Proverbs 3:5-6 teaches wholehearted trust; Jael embodies it, aligning with Israel’s God though her clan is Kenite.

Acts 5:29—“We must obey God rather than men”—echoes through her choice centuries early.

A Small Tool in a Mighty Hand

• A tent peg and mallet, ordinary implements, become instruments of divine judgment (Judges 4:21).

1 Corinthians 1:27—God chooses the weak things of the world to shame the strong—illuminates why her simple tools suffice.

• Her domestic skill (women pitched tents in nomadic culture) is the very skill God employs.

Ripple Effects of Steadfast Action

• Barak sees God’s prophecy fulfilled through Jael (v. 22; cf. v. 9), confirming the Lord’s word.

Judges 5:24-27 celebrates her among the blessed women of the tent, sealing her legacy in Israel’s song.

• Her courage helps break Jabin’s oppression (Judges 4:23-24), showing how one obedient act can tilt history.

Lessons for Everyday Discipleship

• Courage is not the absence of fear but decisive trust in God’s revealed will.

• Obedience may demand disrupting comfortable alliances when they conflict with righteousness.

• God delights to use everyday skills, places, and tools for kingdom purposes.

• Faithful action today prepares the ground for larger victories tomorrow.
