Lessons from Jezebel for our faith?
How can we apply the lessons from Jezebel's story to our spiritual walk?

Setting the Scene

“ When Jehu arrived in Jezreel, Jezebel heard about it. So she painted her eyes, adorned her head, and looked down from a window.” (2 Kings 9:30)

Lesson 1: Cosmetic Cover-ups Can’t Conceal Sin

• Jezebel’s painted eyes and arranged hair were literal attempts to project strength, yet they could not hide her rebellion.

1 Samuel 16:7 reminds us, “For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.”

• Application: Examine motives behind appearance, achievements, social media image, or religious activity. Authentic repentance, not polish, pleases God (2 Corinthians 7:1).

Lesson 2: Pride Precedes the Fall

Proverbs 16:18—“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Jezebel looked down from a window both physically and spiritually.

• Application: Reject any sense of invulnerability. Regularly ask, “Am I teachable?” (1 Peter 5:5).

Lesson 3: Influence Can Be Used for Evil or Good

• Jezebel steered a nation toward Baal worship; her final act is still an attempt at manipulation.

Galatians 6:7—“Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked. Whatever a man sows, he will reap in return.”

• Application: Steward authority—parental, professional, social—so others see Christ, not self-interest.

Lesson 4: God’s Justice Is Certain

• Elijah had prophesied her death (1 Kings 21:23). The literal fulfillment under Jehu underscores the absolute reliability of every divine word.

• Application: Take comfort—evil will not prevail. Live with holy fear, knowing accountability is real (Hebrews 10:30-31).

Lesson 5: Guard Your Heart Against Idolatry

Revelation 2:20 warns believers who “tolerate that woman Jezebel” symbolizing ongoing compromise.

• Application checkpoints:

– Entertainment choices: Do they celebrate impurity?

– Business ethics: Are corners cut for gain?

– Worship focus: Is anything rivaling wholehearted devotion to Christ?

Lesson 6: Cultivate Humble Submission to God

James 4:7-8 offers the antidote Jezebel rejected: “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil… Draw near to God…”

• Practical steps:

– Daily Scripture intake with an obedient posture.

– Confession of sin as soon as conviction comes.

– Seeking counsel from mature believers when pride whispers, “I know best.”

Living It Out Today

• Let every mirror moment prompt a heart check: “Lord, do You see humility and truth?”

• Use influence to build faith in others—encourage, intercede, model integrity.

• Rest in the certainty that God’s promises and warnings stand unshaken; align life accordingly.

In what ways can we guard against vanity and pride in our own lives?
