What can we learn from Joseph's response to the prisoners' dreams? Setting the Scene “Now both of them—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison—had a dream on the same night, and each dream had its own meaning.” (Genesis 40:5) Joseph’s Immediate Response • He noticed their distress (40:6). • He asked caring questions: “Why are your faces so downcast today?” (40:7). • He pointed them to God: “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.” (40:8). • He listened, interpreted faithfully, and spoke the truth—good or bad (40:9-19). • He trusted God’s timing, even when his kindness was forgotten for two more years (40:23; 41:1). What We Learn • Compassion in confinement – Even in his own unjust suffering, Joseph saw others’ pain and acted (Romans 12:15). • Confidence in the Lord, not in self – He declared that all insight “belongs to God.” (see also Genesis 41:16; Daniel 2:27-28). – Proverbs 3:5-6 calls us to the same dependence. • Courage to speak truth – He delivered both restoration and judgment without alteration (Ephesians 4:25). • Stewardship of spiritual gifts – Joseph used God-given abilities for others’ benefit (1 Peter 4:10). • Faithfulness in obscurity – Serving God behind prison walls prepared him for palace service (Luke 16:10). • Hope that perseveres – Two forgotten years did not sour his spirit (Galatians 6:9; Hebrews 6:10-12). Scripture Connections • Genesis 41:16 — “I myself cannot do it…but God will…” • Psalm 105:18-19 — the LORD tested Joseph until His word came to pass. • Romans 8:28 — God works all things for good, even prison seasons. • Colossians 3:23-24 — “Whatever you do, work at it with your whole heart…you are serving the Lord Christ.” Living It Out Today • Notice the hurting around you, even when your own circumstances are tight. • Acknowledge God as the true source of wisdom before offering counsel. • Speak truth lovingly, not selectively. • Use every gifting—big or small—for others’ blessing and God’s honor. • Stay faithful in hidden places; God sees and remembers. |
