Lessons from Moses' role in God's laws?
What can we learn from Moses' role in communicating God's laws to Israel?

Setting the Scene on Mount Sinai

“Afterward all the Israelites came near, and Moses commanded them everything that the LORD had told him on Mount Sinai.” (Exodus 34:32)

The Lord Speaks—Moses Listens

• Moses receives the words directly from God (Exodus 34:27).

• He does not alter, embellish, or omit—he relays “everything.”

Deuteronomy 5:4–5 underscores this role: “I was standing between the LORD and you to declare to you the word of the LORD…”

Mediator and Messenger

• Standing “between” God and the people points ahead to the need for a mediator (Acts 7:38; Hebrews 3:5).

• Moses models faithful service: “Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house” (Hebrews 3:5).

• His example anticipates the perfect Mediator, Jesus (John 1:17; Hebrews 8:6).

Lessons on Faithful Transmission

1. Receive before you speak

– Moses spends forty days listening (Exodus 34:28).

2. Speak only what God says

– “Everything that the LORD had told him” leaves no room for personal spin.

3. Deliver the message to the whole community

– “All the Israelites came near.” God’s law is for everyone, not a select few.

4. Stay accessible

– Moses comes down to the people; he doesn’t demand they scale Sinai.

Obedience and Authority

• The people’s proper response is submission: “We will do everything the LORD has spoken” (Exodus 19:8).

• Accepting God-given authority protects the community from chaos and error (Numbers 16; Romans 13:1–2).

• Authority is never for personal gain; Moses serves, he doesn’t dominate (Numbers 12:3).

The Radiant Witness

• Moses’ face shines after speaking with God (Exodus 34:29).

• Authentic engagement with God leaves visible, transformative evidence (2 Corinthians 3:7–8).

• The glow fades, reminding us the old covenant was temporary, pointing to a greater glory in Christ.

The Call to Hear and Do

Deuteronomy 6:4–6 urges Israel to “hear” and then “love” and “keep.”

James 1:22 repeats the pattern: “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”

• Moses’ faithfulness presses each generation to both listen and obey.

Gospel Echoes

• The law exposes sin (Romans 3:20) and drives us to grace (Galatians 3:24).

• Moses’ mediating role foreshadows Jesus, the Word made flesh, who perfectly reveals the Father (John 1:14, 17).

• At the Transfiguration, the Father shifts attention from Moses to Christ: “This is My beloved Son…listen to Him!” (Matthew 17:5).

Personal Application Today

• Sit with God’s Word before sharing it.

• Pass on Scripture faithfully—no edits, no apologies.

• Stay approachable; bring truth to where people are.

• Let time with God change you visibly.

• Honor God-given authority, but remember it exists to serve.

• Hear, do, and point others to the greater Mediator who fulfills the law.

How does Exodus 34:32 emphasize the importance of sharing God's commands with others?
