Lessons from Obed-edom on stewardship?
What lessons from Obed-edom's story apply to our stewardship of God's blessings?

A snapshot of Obed-edom’s moment

• “So David did not take the ark home to the City of David, but took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.” (1 Chronicles 13:13)

• The ark—visible symbol of God’s holy presence—lived under Obed-edom’s roof for three months.

• Result: “The LORD blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that he had.” (1 Chronicles 13:14; cf. 2 Samuel 6:11)

Opening the door to God’s presence

• Obed-edom welcomed what others feared. The last man who touched the ark (Uzzah) had just died for irreverence (2 Samuel 6:6-7).

• Welcoming God’s presence means receiving His Word and ways without negotiation.

• Personal application: I open every room of my life—finances, time, family—to Him. Revelation 3:20: “If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in…”

Reverence protects the blessing

• Uzzah’s casual touch brought judgment; Obed-edom’s reverent hospitality brought favor.

Hebrews 12:28-29 “let us serve God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.”

• Stewardship principle: Handle sacred trust with caution, not complacency.

When God blesses, the whole house feels it

• The blessing reached “all that he had.”

Psalm 128:1-2 promises household prosperity to those who fear the LORD.

• Our obedient stewardship never stays private; spouses, children, employees, even neighbors taste its overflow.

Faithful stewardship multiplies opportunities

Obed-edom didn’t treat the ark as a one-time event; he kept showing up:

1 Chronicles 15:18-24 – musician and gatekeeper

1 Chronicles 16:38 – minister before the ark

1 Chronicles 26:4-8 – sons made capable gatekeepers

• God entrusts more when we steward well (Luke 16:10).

Passing the torch to the next generation

• Eight sons, sixty-two relatives, all “capable men with strength for the work” (1 Chronicles 26:8).

• A blessed legacy is part of good stewardship: Proverbs 13:22 “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.”

Principles for our stewardship today

• Welcome God’s presence even when it disrupts plans.

• Handle holy things—Scripture, worship, resources—with reverent obedience.

• Expect blessings to ripple outward; manage them for family and community good.

• Serve faithfully where God places you; promotion follows stewardship.

• Train the next generation to carry on the work; blessing expands when multiplied.

Living it out in practical terms

• Budget first for God’s priorities (Proverbs 3:9).

• Schedule daily time for Word and worship—the modern “ark” in your home.

• Open your home for ministry; hospitality often hosts unexpected blessing (Hebrews 13:2).

• Tally God’s gifts weekly; thank Him and look for ways to reinvest them in Kingdom work (James 1:17).

Choose reverent, open-handed stewardship like Obed-edom, and watch the Lord turn blessings into generational legacy.
