Link Jer 29:16 to verses on God's rule.
Connect Jeremiah 29:16 with other scriptures on God's sovereignty over nations.

Jeremiah’s Word to the Stay-Behind King (29:16)

“ This is what the LORD says about the king who sits on David’s throne and all the people who remain in this city, your brothers who did not go with you into exile—” (Jeremiah 29:16)

• The verse sits in a letter Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the Babylonian exiles.

• God is addressing Zedekiah and the remnant still in Jerusalem, asserting full control over what will happen to them.

• By singling out “the king … and all the people,” the Lord reminds Judah that thrones, armies, and city walls do not shield anyone from His decrees.

The Exile—A Living Illustration of Sovereign Rule

• God had already announced, “By My great power and outstretched arm I made the earth … and I give it to whomever I see fit” (Jeremiah 27:5).

• He then declared: “I have placed all these lands under the authority of My servant Nebuchadnezzar” (Jeremiah 27:6).

• In 29:16 the same theme continues: the Lord, not Babylon, decides who stays, who goes, who prospers, and who falls under sword, famine, and plague (29:17-18).

Old Testament Echoes

Daniel 2:21 – “He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings and establishes them.”

Daniel 4:17 – “The Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom He wishes.”

Job 12:23 – “He makes nations great and destroys them; He enlarges nations, and disperses them.”

Psalm 22:28 – “For dominion belongs to the LORD and He rules over the nations.”

Proverbs 21:1 – “The king’s heart is a watercourse in the hand of the LORD; He directs it wherever He pleases.”

Isaiah 40:23 – “He brings the princes to nothing and makes the rulers of the earth meaningless.”

New Testament Confirmation

Acts 17:26 – “From one man He made every nation … and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands.”

Romans 13:1 – “There is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God.”

Putting the Pieces Together

• God alone sets national boundaries, timelines, and leaders.

• He can use a pagan emperor (Nebuchadnezzar) as easily as a covenant king (David).

• Judgment on Jerusalem and the exile of Judah were not failures of divine power but demonstrations of it.

• Every shift on the world stage—ancient or modern—unfolds under the same sovereign hand.

Living the Truth Today

• Global news may feel chaotic, yet Scripture shows a God who is never surprised.

• Because He “removes kings and establishes them,” we can give thanks when leaders act justly and pray confidently when they do not.

• Trust flourishes when we remember that the One who directed Judah’s exile also directs our generation’s nations, borders, and rulers, working all things to fulfill His redemptive purposes.

How can we discern false promises today, as warned in Jeremiah 29:16?
