Jeremiah’s Promise: God Dwells Among His People

Jeremiah 32:38: “They will be My people, and I will be their God.”

• A literal pledge of relationship—God binds Himself to a redeemed people.

Covenant Echoes in the New Testament

2 Corinthians 6:16: “For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will dwell with them and walk among them; I will be their God, and they will be My people.’”

– Paul quotes Jeremiah, declaring the same promise fulfilled in the church.

Hebrews 8:10: “This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put My laws in their minds and inscribe them on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people.”

– The writer identifies Jeremiah’s words with the better covenant inaugurated by Christ.

Revelation 21:3: “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God.”

– The promise reaches its visible climax in the new heaven and new earth.

Indwelling Presence Through the Holy Spirit

John 14:17, 23: “…He remains with you and will be in you… We will come to him and make Our home with him.”

– The Spirit internalizes the Jeremiah promise; God does not merely visit—He resides.

Romans 8:9: “If indeed the Spirit of God lives in you… Christ lives in you.”

– Union with Christ by the Spirit confirms believers as God’s people.

Identity and Belonging in Christ

Galatians 3:26: “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”

1 Peter 2:9–10: “…a people for God’s own possession… Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people.”

– Faith in Jesus transfers the covenant identity to every believer, Jew or Gentile.

Ephesians 2:19: “You are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household.”

– The covenant relationship restructures our primary allegiance and community.

Today’s Assurance for Every Believer

• The same God who spoke through Jeremiah has staked His name on owning and caring for His redeemed.

• Because Scripture is literally true, the promise stands unbroken:

– God claims us—“My people.”

– God commits Himself—“I will be their God.”

• Our daily confidence rests not in fluctuating feelings but in an unchanging covenant sealed by Christ’s blood and confirmed by the Spirit’s indwelling presence.

How can we apply the promise of being God's people in our lives?
