Mark 9:26: Jesus' power over demons?
How does Mark 9:26 demonstrate Jesus' authority over evil spirits in our lives?

The Scene in Mark 9:26

• “After shrieking and convulsing him violently, the spirit came out; and the boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, ‘He is dead.’”

• A real boy, a real unclean spirit, a real deliverance—recorded precisely so we may know the authority of Christ is no mere idea but a factual, historical power.

Jesus’ Authority Displayed in Three Movements

1. The Shout

– The demon “shrieking” signals panic; even evil recognizes the supremacy of Jesus (cf. James 2:19).

2. The Convulsion

– The violent struggle shows the malicious intent of the spirit, yet its fury only confirms that it must obey the Lord’s word given in v. 25.

3. The Exit

– The spirit “came out.” No bargaining, no delay. The command of Jesus is final (cf. Mark 1:25–27).

Why This Matters for Our Battles with Evil

• Absolute supremacy

– “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.” (Matthew 28:18)

– The same Christ who spoke then rules now; demons remain under His Lordship.

• Total victory already secured

– “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8)

– At the cross He “disarmed the rulers and authorities.” (Colossians 2:15)

• Personal application

– We stand in His victory: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)

– Our authority is delegated, never independent: “I have given you authority… over all the power of the enemy.” (Luke 10:19)

Living Under Jesus’ Ongoing Authority

• Stay surrendered

– Spiritual authority flows from obedience (John 15:7).

• Cling to Scripture

– Jesus wielded God’s word against Satan (Matthew 4:1-11); we do likewise (Ephesians 6:17).

• Pray in faith

– The disciples’ earlier failure (Mark 9:17-18, 28-29) teaches that victory comes through prayerful dependence, not human technique.

• Walk in purity

– Unconfessed sin gives the enemy a foothold (Ephesians 4:26-27).

Encouragement for Today

The shriek, the struggle, and the sudden silence in Mark 9 remind us that evil may roar, but it cannot resist the voice of Jesus. As we face temptation, oppression, or spiritual opposition, we stand with the One whose single command banished the demon and restored the boy. His authority is undiminished, His word is sure, and His victory is our inheritance.
