What modern practices might lead us away from exclusive devotion to God? The Ancient Warning “Nevertheless, every nation carved out its own gods and put them in the shrines of the high places that the people of Samaria had made—each nation in the cities where they lived.” (2 Kings 17:29) Israel’s neighbors filled empty sanctuaries with gods of their own making. The pattern is clear: whenever people drift from exclusive devotion to the LORD, they instinctively replace Him with something else. Across the Centuries: Familiar Temptations Nothing has really changed. The forms are upgraded, the heart-issue identical. Our culture still manufactures “shrines” and invites us to bow. Modern Practices That Rival Our Allegiance • Consumerism and materialism—“Retail therapy,” debt-driven lifestyles, chasing the next upgrade • Digital absorption—endless scrolling, binge-watching, gaming marathons that crowd out prayer and Scripture • Celebrity and influencer worship—knowing every detail of a famous life while knowing little of Christ • Careerism—measuring worth by promotions, titles, or productivity instead of obedience • Political or national identity elevated above kingdom identity—treating party lines as gospel truth • Self-expanding spirituality—mixing crystals, horoscopes, mindfulness or manifesting with a dash of Bible verses • Sports and entertainment obsession—stadiums and streaming platforms function as modern temples • Pornography and hyper-sexualized media—feeding desires God calls us to crucify • Substance dependence—alcohol, vaping, drugs or even caffeine extremes relied on for comfort over the Spirit • Greed in investing and gambling—pursuing quick gain, tolerating ethical gray zones • Technological trust—believing science will eventually answer every ultimate question, leaving no room for faith Cautions From the Rest of Scripture • Exodus 20:3—“You shall have no other gods before Me.” • Matthew 6:24—“You cannot serve both God and money.” • 1 John 5:21—“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.” • Colossians 3:5—greed “is idolatry.” • James 4:4—friendship with the world is hostility toward God. • 1 Corinthians 10:14—“flee from idolatry.” Living Undivided Today • Compare every habit with the first commandment: Does this make me love God more or less? • Schedule daily, device-free time in the Word—establish a non-negotiable sanctuary of truth. • Practice Sabbath simplicity—regularly turning off buying, scrolling, and working to remember Who provides. • Speak Christ’s name openly—in conversations, online posts, even in political spaces—so loyalty stays clear. • Give generously—breaking consumerism’s grip by funding gospel work and caring for the needy. • Invite accountability—friends who will notice when a hobby, screen, or relationship starts competing for first place. • Celebrate communion and corporate worship faithfully—shared adoration anchors the heart in the only rightful King. Exclusive devotion is not a restriction; it is liberation. When the shrines of our age call out, 2 Kings 17:29 reminds us where divided loyalty leads. The Savior who bought us deserves—and lovingly demands—our whole heart. |
