OT prophecies fulfilled in Luke 24:36?
What Old Testament prophecies are fulfilled by Jesus' appearance in Luke 24:36?

Setting the Scene in Luke 24:36

The disciples are huddled together, doors shut, fear and wonder mingling in their hearts. Suddenly, the risen Jesus appears right in the middle of the room and says, “Peace be with you.” This single verse fulfills a cluster of Old Testament promises that predicted both His resurrection and the peace He would personally deliver to His followers.

Resurrection Foretold—The Messiah Would Not Remain in the Grave

Psalm 16:10 – “For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay.”

– The empty tomb and Jesus’ bodily presence among the disciples prove David’s prophetic words literally true.

Isaiah 53:10-11 – “Yet it pleased the LORD to crush Him… He will prolong His days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in His hand. After the anguish of His soul, He will see the light of life and be satisfied.”

– Isaiah promises that the Suffering Servant would live again to enjoy the results of His sacrificial work. Luke 24:36 is that very moment.

Hosea 6:2 – “After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will raise us up, that we may live in His presence.”

– Jesus rises on the third day and literally stands in their midst, embodying Hosea’s hope of life in God’s presence.

Appearing to His Brethren—Public Praise After Suffering

Psalm 22:22 – “I will proclaim Your name to my brothers; I will praise You in the assembly.”

– The same psalm that foretold the crucifixion (vv. 16-18) also promised that the Messiah would later stand among His “brothers.” Jesus fulfills this as He shows up in the frightened gathering and speaks peace.

Peace Brought by the Messiah—Shalom in Person

Isaiah 9:6 – “For unto us a Child is born… and He will be called… Prince of Peace.”

– By greeting them with “Peace,” Jesus acts in the very role Isaiah assigned Him.

Isaiah 52:7 – “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace.”

– The resurrected Christ, bearing the nail prints in His feet, personally announces that good news of peace.

Zechariah 9:9-10 – “Behold, your King is coming to you… He will proclaim peace to the nations.”

– The King who rode the colt into Jerusalem now confirms His victory by offering peace face-to-face.

Micah 5:4-5 – “He will stand and shepherd His flock… and He will be their peace.”

– Luke’s wording—Jesus “stood among them”—echoes Micah’s promise of a shepherd-king who literally stands with His people to be their peace.

Isaiah 57:19 – “Peace, peace to those far and near,” says the LORD, “and I will heal them.”

– The greeting of “Peace be with you” initiates the spiritual healing Isaiah foretold.

Why the Details Matter

• Bodily presence: The disciples can touch Him (vv. 39-40), proving Psalm 16 and Isaiah 53 simultaneously.

• Immediate peace: Fear turns to joy (v. 41), showcasing the “Prince of Peace” reality.

• Commission that follows (vv. 47-49): Isaiah 52:7’s “good news” begins to spread, just as predicted.

Every element in Luke 24:36—the sudden appearance, the physical resurrection, the greeting of peace—threads back to promises stitched through the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms. Jesus’ simple words, “Peace be with you,” announce that every one of those promises has now stepped into the room, alive and fulfilled.
