Other Scriptures on God's leader choice?
Which other Scriptures emphasize God's sovereignty in appointing leaders?

Starting Point: Psalm 109:8

“May his days be few; may another take his position.”

– The psalmist’s plea assumes that leadership can change in an instant because God Himself controls every appointment.

God Appoints and Removes Kings

Daniel 2:21 – “He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings and establishes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.”

Daniel 4:17 – “…so that the living may know that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes, setting over it the lowliest of men.”

Psalm 75:6-7 – “For exaltation comes neither from east nor west, nor out of the desert, but it is God who judges; He brings one down and exalts another.”

Job 12:23 – “He makes nations great and destroys them; He enlarges nations and disperses them.”

These verses echo Psalm 109:8 by stating plainly that God both dethrones and enthrones according to His purpose.

He Directs the Hearts of Those in Authority

Proverbs 21:1 – “The king’s heart is a watercourse in the hand of the LORD; He directs it wherever He pleases.”

Even when rulers stay in power, their decisions never escape God’s steering hand.

Every Nation Exists on His Schedule

Acts 17:26 – “From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands.”

Jeremiah 27:5 – “By My great power and outstretched arm, I made the earth… and I give it to whomever I see fit.”

History’s map is God-drawn; leaders rise precisely when and where He decides.

Submission to Authority Because It Is God-Given

Romans 13:1 – “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been appointed by God.”

Honoring governmental leaders is ultimately an act of honoring the One who put them there.

Majesty and Ownership Belong to the Lord

1 Chronicles 29:11-12 – “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty… You are the ruler over all.”

All power is on loan from God, so He remains King even when earthly thrones change hands.

He Brings Rulers to Nothing

Isaiah 40:23-24 – “He brings the princes to nothing and makes the rulers of the earth meaningless. No sooner are they planted… than He blows on them and they wither.”

Human authority looks impressive until the Lord breathes, and then it disappears like chaff.

Living in the Light of His Rule

– Because God alone decides who leads and how long, believers can rest rather than fret over political shifts.

– Prayer, respect, and trust replace anxiety when we remember that every office—from local councils to global empires—sits beneath the throne of the Almighty.
