Pure words from an upright heart

“ My words come from an upright heart; my lips speak sincerely what I know.” (Job 33:3)

Truth begins inside

• God looks first at the heart. Upright words flow from an upright inner life (Proverbs 4:23).

Psalm 15:1-2 shows that those welcome in God’s presence “speak truth from [their] heart.”

• A truthful spirit aligns with God, who “is not a man, that He should lie” (Numbers 23:19).

Old Testament foundations for truthful speech

Proverbs 12:17 – “He who speaks the truth declares righteousness.”

Proverbs 12:19 – “Truthful lips endure forever.”

Proverbs 12:22 – “Lying lips are detestable to the LORD, but those who deal faithfully are His delight.”

Zechariah 8:16 – “Speak truth to one another; render true and sound judgments.”

Psalm 34:13 – “Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceit.”

Isaiah 59:14-15 warns that when truth stumbles, society unravels.

New Testament emphasis on sincere speech

Matthew 5:37 – “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ Anything more comes from evil.”

John 14:6 – Jesus calls Himself “the truth,” making honesty a Christ-like mark.

Ephesians 4:25 – “Put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are members of one another.”

Ephesians 4:15 – “Speaking the truth in love” promotes maturity in the body of Christ.

Colossians 3:9 – “Do not lie to one another, since you have taken off the old self.”

James 5:12 – “Above all… let your ‘Yes’ be yes and your ‘No’ no, so that you will not fall under judgment.”

1 Peter 3:10 (quoting Psalm 34) connects truthful lips with enjoying good days.

Revelation 21:8 lists “all liars” among those facing final judgment, underscoring gravity.

Why truthful speech matters

• Reflects God’s character and honors His name.

• Builds trust, unity, and credible witness inside the church (2 Corinthians 4:2).

• Guards us from the enemy, “a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44).

• Positions us for blessing, protection, and answered prayer (Psalm 66:18).

Living truthfully each day

• Guard the heart through Scripture and prayer; the mouth follows the heart.

• Invite the Spirit to produce sincerity, not just accuracy (Galatians 5:22 – “faithfulness” includes truthfulness).

• Resolve to speak only words that align with reality and with love.

• Correct any deception quickly; repentance restores fellowship and credibility.
