Prevent envy from causing harm?
What steps can we take to prevent envy from leading to harmful actions?

The Scene of Joseph’s Brothers

“Here comes that dreamer!” (Genesis 37:19)

Joseph’s brothers let a single jealous thought snowball into a murderous plot. Their story is a sober reminder: unchecked envy always looks for an outlet—and that outlet hurts people.

Step 1: Expose Envy Early

• Acknowledge it the moment it surfaces. Hidden envy festers.

James 3:16: “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice.”

• Pray Psalm 139:23–24, inviting God to search the heart and reveal any jealous way in us.

Step 2: Replace Comparison with Gratitude

• List specific blessings God has given you. Gratitude crowds out envy.

1 Thessalonians 5:18: “Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Proverbs 14:30: “A tranquil heart is life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”

Step 3: Speak Blessing Instead of Grumbling

• Verbally celebrate the success of others.

Romans 12:15: “Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.”

Ephesians 4:29: “Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need.”

Step 4: Walk by the Spirit

Galatians 5:16: “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

• Daily ask the Spirit to produce His fruit—“love… joy… peace… kindness… goodness… faithfulness… gentleness… self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).

• Love and envy cannot occupy the same space (1 Corinthians 13:4).

Step 5: Cultivate Accountability

• Share struggles with a mature believer who will ask hard questions and pray.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: “Two are better than one… if either one falls, the other can help him up.”

Step 6: Remember God’s Sovereignty

• God assigns gifts, positions, and seasons according to His wisdom.

John 21:22: Jesus said, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you? You follow Me!”

• Joseph’s own later testimony: “You meant evil against me, but God intended it for good” (Genesis 50:20). Trusting that truth disarms envy.

Step 7: Actively Serve the One You’re Tempted to Envy

• Serving shifts focus from self to Christlike love.

Matthew 20:28: “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.”

Putting It All Together

Recognize envy, thank God for your portion, celebrate others out loud, live in step with the Spirit, stay accountable, rest in God’s sovereignty, and serve those you’re tempted to resent. Follow these steps and the destructive path that began with “Here comes that dreamer!” will be cut off before it ever starts.
