Qualities of Epaphras to emulate?
What qualities of Epaphras should we emulate in our Christian walk?

Epaphras in Scripture

“as you also learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf,” (Colossians 1:7)

Grounded in the True Gospel

• The Colossians “learned” the gospel from him (Colossians 1:7).

• He delivered “the word of truth, the gospel” exactly as he had received it (Colossians 1:5).

• Emulate: cling to the unaltered message (Galatians 1:8-9), handle it “accurately” (2 Timothy 2:15).

Beloved Fellow Servant

• Paul calls him “beloved” (Colossians 1:7) and “my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus” (Philemon 1:23).

• His life drew genuine affection because he served humbly among the saints.

• Emulate: cultivate relationships marked by love and mutual service (John 13:34-35).

Faithful Minister of Christ

• “Faithful” points to steady reliability (Colossians 1:7).

• Faithfulness is a Spirit-produced fruit (Galatians 5:22) and required of stewards (1 Corinthians 4:2).

• Emulate: finish assignments, keep promises, remain loyal under pressure (Revelation 2:10).

Prayerful Laborer

• “Epaphras… is always wrestling for you in his prayers” (Colossians 4:12).

• He labors “earnestly” (Greek: agonizomai) for believers’ maturity.

• Emulate: intercede persistently and passionately (Ephesians 6:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Zealous for Others’ Maturity

• He prays “that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God” (Colossians 4:12).

• True ministry aims beyond conversion to full discipleship (Matthew 28:19-20).

• Emulate: invest in helping others grow, not merely “count decisions.”

Hard-Working and Sacrificial

• Paul testifies, “I bear him witness that he has worked hard for you” (Colossians 4:13).

• Ministry cost him energy, freedom (Philemon 1:23), and perhaps health.

• Emulate: serve beyond comfort, “always abounding in the work of the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Locally Invested, Globally Minded

• He was “one of you” (Colossians 4:12) from Colossae, yet he labored also for Laodicea and Hierapolis (Colossians 4:13).

• Emulate: pour into your home church while keeping a vision for neighboring communities and the world (Acts 1:8).

Summary

Epaphras models a gospel-anchored, love-filled, faithful, prayer-driven, hard-working ministry focused on others’ spiritual maturity. By the Spirit’s power, we can walk in these same qualities today.
