Remove modern idols: How to identify?
How can we identify and remove modern-day idols from our lives?

The Ancient Picture: Isaiah 57:7

“On a high and lofty mountain you have made your bed, and there you went up to offer sacrifices.”

• Israel literally climbed visible peaks to honor false gods.

• The height symbolized pride—elevating anything above the Lord.

• The text exposes the heart’s tendency to build private “high places” even when no carved statue is present.

Spotting Today’s High Hills

• Pleasure – entertainment, hobbies, appetites that overrule obedience.

• Possessions – money, status symbols, relentless upgrading.

• Position – career advancement, influence, applause.

• People – relationships, family, celebrities whose approval outweighs God’s.

• Platforms – phones, social media, gaming, streaming that crowd out devotion.

Clear Indicators of a Hidden Idol

• Consumes the majority of free thoughts and conversations.

• Claims the first and best of time, energy, or money.

• Triggers anger, panic, or despair when threatened or removed.

• Shapes identity more than belonging to Christ.

Exodus 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.”

Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters…”

The First Step: Repentant Acknowledgment

• Agree with God’s verdict that the rival is sin (Colossians 3:5).

• Confess specifically, naming the idol (1 John 1:9).

• Receive cleansing; Christ’s blood fully satisfies God’s justice.

Replacing Idols with True Worship

• Redirect affection: delight in the Lord through praise and Scripture (Psalm 37:4).

• Redirect dependence: present needs and desires to Him first (Philippians 4:6-7).

• Redirect sacrifices: invest resources in kingdom purposes (2 Corinthians 9:7-8).

1 John 5:21 “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”

Daily Practices that Guard the Heart

• Morning surrender—consciously enthrone Christ as Lord each day.

• Scripture saturation—steady intake reshapes values (Psalm 119:11).

• Accountability—trusted believers speak up when something rivals God (Hebrews 3:13).

• Rhythms of rest—regular Sabbath habits break the grip of productivity idols.

• Generous giving—habitual generosity dethrones materialism.

Living on the Only True High Hill

Psalm 24:3-4 pictures clean-handed saints ascending God’s holy mountain. By tearing down counterfeit elevations and exalting the risen Christ, the heart stands on that hill alone—free, satisfied, and wholly His.
