How can we respond to opposition like Paul in Acts 18:17? “At this, the crowd seized Sosthenes the synagogue leader and beat him in front of the judgment seat. But none of this was of concern to Gallio.” Setting the Scene • Paul has just been dragged before Gallio by hostile Jews (18:12–16). • Gallio dismisses the complaint, refusing to interfere in religious disputes. • Frustrated, the mob vents its fury on Sosthenes while Paul stands by, untouched and silent. Paul’s Model Under Fire • Calm composure—no panic, no retaliation. • Trust in God’s earlier promise: “Do not be afraid… for I am with you” (Acts 18:9-10). • Submission to lawful authority—he lets the proconsul’s ruling stand. • Persistence in mission—“Paul stayed on for some time” (18:18); opposition does not derail the gospel. How We Can Respond to Opposition • Expect resistance. Jesus forewarned, “If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first” (John 15:18). • Rest in divine assurance. God’s presence, not favorable circumstances, secures us (Isaiah 41:10). • Refuse revenge. “Do not repay anyone evil for evil… leave room for God’s wrath” (Romans 12:17-19). • Rely on legitimate authority where possible; it is “God’s servant for your good” (Romans 13:4). • Keep the main thing the main thing—continue serving, preaching, loving (1 Corinthians 15:58). • Respond with grace. “When we are reviled, we bless” (1 Corinthians 4:12-13). • Recognize that God can turn foes into friends; Sosthenes later greets the Corinthian church alongside Paul (1 Corinthians 1:1).
