How should we respond when others attempt to undermine God's plans for us? Setting the Scene 1 Kings 1:10 records Adonijah’s clandestine coronation attempt: “But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, or Benaiah, or the mighty men, or Solomon his brother.” By excluding the voices loyal to God’s revealed plan—that Solomon would succeed David (1 Chron 22:9-10)—Adonijah tried to sidestep the Lord’s purpose. What follows in the chapter shows how God’s people can respond when someone tries to derail His plan for their lives. Recognize the Threat • Undermining often begins quietly, in closed circles or private conversations. • Adonijah’s selective invitations signaled deception; those loyal to God’s word were intentionally left out. • Discernment is essential (Proverbs 14:15). Ask: “Does this action align with what God has already revealed?” Stay Aligned with God’s Word • Solomon’s right to the throne was not a mere preference; it was God’s stated promise (1 Kings 1:17; 1 Chron 22:9-10). • When agendas clash, Scripture remains the final authority. • Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” • Hold firmly to what God has said, even if others dismiss it. Seek Godly Counsel • Nathan immediately sought Bathsheba and urged joint action (1 Kings 1:11-14). • Wise counselors see the bigger picture and reinforce God’s perspective (Proverbs 11:14). • Surround yourself with believers who know Scripture and aren’t swayed by popular opinion. Act Wisely and Proactively • Nathan and Bathsheba approached David respectfully yet urgently (1 Kings 1:15-21). • They presented facts, reminded David of God’s promise, and proposed a clear plan. • James 2:17 reminds us that faith expresses itself through decisive, obedient action. Maintain Integrity Under Pressure • Nathan avoided slander; he stuck to verifiable events and God’s promise. • Integrity keeps us from stooping to the manipulative tactics of those opposing God’s plan (1 Peter 3:16). • Romans 12:17-18: “Do not repay anyone evil for evil… If it is possible… live at peace with everyone.” Trust God’s Sovereignty • Despite Adonijah’s plotting, David installed Solomon as king the same day (1 Kings 1:32-40). • Proverbs 19:21: “Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose of the LORD will prevail.” • Psalm 33:10-11 affirms that God nullifies human schemes and establishes His own. Putting It All Together When others attempt to undermine God’s plans for us: 1. Identify the threat through biblical discernment. 2. Anchor yourself in what God has already revealed. 3. Invite wise, scripturally grounded counsel. 4. Act with courage, clarity, and integrity. 5. Rest in the certainty that God’s purposes cannot be thwarted (Isaiah 14:27). Respond this way, and like Solomon, you’ll witness God turning hidden opposition into public confirmation of His will. |
