How should we respond when faced with pressure to act against God's will? Balaam’s Dilemma—Numbers 22:15 “Then Balak again sent princes, more numerous and more distinguished than the first ones.” Balak turns up the heat. The bribes grow, the messengers look more impressive, the appeal feels harder to refuse. We know this feeling: a second email, a bigger bonus, a louder crowd, a “just once” request that keeps repeating. Pressure Multiplies When We Pause • Balaam had already heard God’s clear “No” (22:12). • His delay opened the door for Balak’s bigger offer. • Hesitation signals to onlookers—and to our own hearts—that we might still be persuadable. God’s Will Remains Unmoved Balaam replied, “Even if Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do anything beyond the word of the LORD my God.” (22:18) God’s Word does not flex with social rank, wealth, or repetition. What He said yesterday stands today. Principles for Resisting Ungodly Pressure • Remember who called you. The fear of the LORD is stronger than the fear of missing out. (Proverbs 29:25) • Draw a clear line early. Ambiguity invites temptation to keep negotiating. • Speak God’s Word aloud. Balaam’s best moment was quoting what God had said; our mouths can reinforce our hearts. • Watch the motives beneath the offer—fame, money, comfort, approval. (1 John 2:16) • Refuse incremental steps. Small compromises pave the way for larger ones. • Seek accountability. Balaam was alone with Balak’s princes; isolation weakens resolve. Echoes in Scripture—Others Under Fire • Joseph: “How then could I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9) • Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego: “Our God…is able to deliver us…but even if He does not…” (Daniel 3:17-18) • Peter and the apostles: “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29) • Paul: “Stand firm, then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist.” (Ephesians 6:14) The Danger of Partial Obedience Balaam eventually went with the princes (22:21) and later helped Israel’s enemies entice God’s people into sin (31:16; Revelation 2:14). Saying the right words is not enough; our feet must match our lips. Living It Out Today • Expect temptation to return “more numerous and more distinguished.” • Anchor yourself daily in Scripture—God’s settled, literal truth fortifies the mind. • Lean on promised grace: “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind…He will also provide a way out.” (1 Corinthians 10:13) • Put on spiritual armor before the battle, not during it. (Ephesians 6:10-18) • Flee when necessary (2 Timothy 2:22); stand when commanded (James 4:7). Standing firm begins long before the next Balak knocks. Plant yourself in God’s unchanging Word now, and no entourage—however “distinguished”—will move you later. |
