Responding to others' dreams?
How should we respond to others' dreams or visions, based on Genesis 37:6?

Verse Snapshot

“ He said to them, ‘Listen to this dream I had:’ ” (Genesis 37:6)

Listening Well

• Give the speaker your attention; Joseph invited his brothers to “listen.”

• Avoid hasty judgment. Proverbs 18:13 reminds, “He who answers before listening—this is folly and shame.”

• Let the person finish; dreams often unfold in sequence, and interrupting can distort understanding.

Testing by Scripture

• Any dream or vision must align with God’s written word (Deuteronomy 13:1-3; Isaiah 8:20).

• Scripture is the final authority; if the message contradicts clear teaching, reject it.

• “Do not despise prophecies, but test all things; hold fast to what is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:20-21)

Weighing the Fruit

• Observe the speaker’s character (Matthew 7:16-18). Joseph’s integrity eventually validated his dreams.

• Look for godly outcomes—repentance, faith, love—rather than self-exaltation (James 3:17).

Guarding Against Jealousy

• Joseph’s brothers were provoked to envy (Genesis 37:11).

• Celebrate potential revelation rather than resent it (Romans 12:15).

• Envy blinds discernment; humility keeps the heart open to God’s purposes.

Seeking Confirmation

• Ask for corroboration through prayer, Scripture, and mature believers (Proverbs 11:14).

• God often confirms genuine revelation by repetition or subsequent events (Genesis 41:32).

Responding in Love and Wisdom

• Speak truth graciously (Ephesians 4:15).

• Encourage the dreamer to keep seeking God, while also encouraging accountability.

• Maintain confidentiality when necessary; Joseph’s brothers spread ill will, illustrating the harm of careless words.

Living the Lesson

• Listen carefully, test biblically, guard your heart, seek confirmation, and respond with Christ-like love. In doing so, you honor God, respect the dreamer, and keep your own steps firm on the foundation of His unchanging word.
