How should we respond when God finishes speaking to us, as in Genesis 17:22? “When He had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.” The weight of the moment • God’s departure signals that His revelation is complete for now. • Nothing more needs adding or editing—He has said exactly what He intends (Numbers 23:19). • The silence that follows is an invitation to move from hearing to living. Pause and absorb • Let the last word ring: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). • Replay His words in your mind; meditate until they settle into conviction (Joshua 1:8). • Write them down—Abraham remembered every detail, enabling precise obedience. Immediate obedience • Abraham “took his son Ishmael and all those born in his house… and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day” (Genesis 17:23). • God’s final period becomes our first step: do what He said without delay (James 1:22). • Obedience keeps the conversation alive; disobedience turns the silence into distance (John 14:23-24). Worship in reverence • God “went up,” reminding Abraham of His majesty; appropriate response—worship (Genesis 17:3; Exodus 34:8). • Worship not only honors God but seals His word in grateful remembrance (Psalm 103:1-2). Guard the revelation • “Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you” (Proverbs 30:6). • Resist the urge to tweak, soften, or postpone what He has said. • Share it faithfully with those it concerns—as Abraham did with Sarah and his household. Walk forward in faith • Silence doesn’t mean absence; it means trust is being tested (Habakkuk 2:3). • Keep walking until He speaks again; following the last clear instruction positions us for the next (Acts 8:26-30). • Live expectantly: “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it” (Luke 11:28). Practical take-away 1. Stop—give God the last word. 2. Soak—meditate until His word becomes conviction. 3. Step—act immediately, precisely, joyfully. 4. Sing—worship seals the truth in praise. 5. Stand—hold the line, trusting He will speak again in His perfect time. When God finishes speaking, our role is simple: treasure the word, obey it, and walk on in reverent faith until He speaks again. |
