Ruth 1:11: Naomi's selfless concern?
How does Ruth 1:11 demonstrate Naomi's selflessness and concern for her daughters-in-law?

Setting the Scene

• After the deaths of her husband and sons, Naomi prepares to leave Moab for Bethlehem.

• Ruth and Orpah insist on accompanying her, but Naomi pauses to address their future.

Key Verse: Ruth 1:11

“But Naomi replied, ‘Return home, my daughters. Why would you go with me? Are there still sons in my womb that they may become your husbands?’”

Naomi's Selflessness on Display

• She relinquishes companionship: Naomi prefers traveling alone rather than holding on to the comforting presence of Ruth and Orpah.

• She sacrifices potential support: Two younger women could have eased her labor and provided emotional help in Bethlehem, yet she urges them to stay.

• She places their prospects above her own loneliness, highlighting the self-denying love praised in Philippians 2:3–4.

Expressions of Concern for Their Future

• Realistic assessment: Naomi knows that under Israel’s levirate law (Deuteronomy 25:5), the chance of her bearing new sons is virtually zero. She refuses to let them cling to an impossible hope.

• Desire for security: By sending them back, she hopes they will remarry among their own people (cf. Ruth 1:9), gaining protection, provision, and children.

• Emotional tenderness: Addressing them repeatedly as “my daughters” (vv. 11–13) reveals a motherly heart, not mere formal courtesy.

Contrast with Potential Self-interest

• A self-focused widow might insist they accompany her for financial help or social standing in Bethlehem; Naomi does the opposite.

• Instead of appealing to duty, she releases them from obligation, mirroring Abraham’s unselfish faith in Genesis 13:9 when he let Lot choose the best land.

Outflow of Covenant Loyalty (Chesed)

• Naomi’s action flows from the covenant kindness she herself has experienced from the LORD (Ruth 1:6).

• Her behavior foreshadows Ruth’s own sacrificial loyalty (1:16–17) and ultimately reflects the greater love summed up by Jesus: “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

Lessons for Today

• Genuine love releases others to God’s best, even at personal cost.

• Faith acts on reality while trusting the LORD for provision.

• Selfless concern often becomes the seedbed for unexpected blessings—as Naomi will soon discover through Ruth and Boaz (Ruth 4:13–17).
