Seek God's wisdom in leadership like Pharaoh?
How can we seek God's wisdom in leadership decisions like Pharaoh did?

Setting the Scene

“ ‘This proposal pleased Pharaoh and all his servants.’ ” (Genesis 41:37)

Pharaoh had just listened to Joseph lay out a God-given strategy for saving Egypt from famine. Instead of brushing it off, he recognized divine wisdom and responded immediately. His choice shows us how to seek—and embrace—God’s wisdom when we carry leadership responsibility today.

1 – Recognize God’s Voice Early

• Pharaoh didn’t wait for a crisis to worsen; he listened the moment Joseph finished speaking.

John 10:27 reminds us, “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.” Train your ear in Scripture daily so you spot God’s wisdom when it surfaces in meetings, emails, or casual comments.

• Check every option against the character of God revealed in His Word (Hebrews 4:12).

2 – Look for Spirit-Filled Counsel

• Pharaoh asked, “Can we find anyone like this man, in whom is the Spirit of God?” (Genesis 41:38).

• Seek advisers who are clearly walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

Proverbs 15:22: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”

• Filter résumés not just for competence but for evidence of godliness.

3 – Submit the Decision to Prayerful Asking

James 1:5: “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously.”

• Before drafting a plan or voting on a proposal, pause and ask specifically for insight.

• Use short, honest prayers throughout the process—“Lord, steady my thoughts,” “Show me hidden motives.”

4 – Align with God’s Revealed Purposes

• Joseph’s plan fit God’s earlier revelation in Pharaoh’s dreams; it didn’t contradict it.

• When you sense a possible direction, test whether it complements what God has already shown you in Scripture.

Proverbs 3:6: “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

5 – Act Quickly, Obey Fully

• Pharaoh immediately promoted Joseph and mobilized resources. Delay would have wasted the seven years of plenty.

Luke 11:28: “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

• Partial obedience (doing the plan halfway) isn’t obedience. Implement completely.

6 – Keep Listening as the Plan Unfolds

• Joseph adjusted storage and distribution logistics over fourteen years; Pharaoh allowed ongoing input.

Psalm 32:8: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you.”

• Schedule review points to ask, “Lord, anything to refine?”

Quick Application Checklist for Leaders

□ Have I immersed myself in God’s Word today so I’ll recognize His voice?

□ Am I surrounding myself with Spirit-led advisers?

□ Have I asked God plainly for wisdom about this decision?

□ Does the proposal align with Scripture and previous guidance?

□ Will I obey promptly and thoroughly?

□ Am I committed to ongoing dependence on God after the first step?

Follow these steps, and like Pharaoh you’ll find yourself not merely making good decisions, but serving as a channel for God’s redemptive wisdom in your sphere of influence.
