Solomon's rise & God's promises to David?
How does Solomon's exaltation connect to God's promises to David?

Setting the Moment

1 Chronicles ends with a joyous coronation scene. David hands the throne to Solomon, the people rejoice, and then we read:

“The LORD highly exalted Solomon in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on him royal majesty such as had not been bestowed on any king in Israel before him.” (1 Chronicles 29:25)

The Covenant Behind the Crown

Long before Solomon sat on the throne, God spoke an unshakeable word to David:

1 Chronicles 17:11-14 (cf. 2 Samuel 7:12-16)

“I will raise up your offspring after you… and I will establish his kingdom. He will build a house for Me, and I will establish his throne forever.”

Psalm 89:3-4

“I have made a covenant with My chosen one; I have sworn to David My servant: ‘I will establish your offspring forever and confirm your throne for all generations.’”

Key elements of the promise:

– A son from David’s own body

– A kingdom God Himself would “establish”

– A throne intended to endure “forever”

Solomon’s Exaltation: Visible Proof God Keeps His Word

When 1 Chronicles 29:25 says the LORD “highly exalted” Solomon, it is more than a feel-good moment; it is the covenant springing to life.

• “In the sight of all Israel” – the whole nation witnesses divine faithfulness.

• “Royal majesty such as had not been bestowed on any king in Israel before him” – God’s blessing on the new king is unmistakable, echoing 1 Kings 3:13 where God promises Solomon unrivaled splendor.

• David’s peaceful succession – 1 Kings 2:12, “Solomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his kingdom was firmly established.” The very word “established” mirrors God’s earlier pledge.

From Promise to Fulfillment: How the Pieces Fit

1. Same Source

– Promise: “I will raise up your offspring after you.” (1 Chronicles 17:11)

– Fulfillment: “Solomon son of David was strengthened in his kingdom.” (2 Chronicles 1:1)

2. Same Builder

– Promise: “He will build a house for Me.” (1 Chronicles 17:12)

– Fulfillment: Solomon begins the temple in 2 Chronicles 3:1.

3. Same Throne

– Promise: “I will establish his throne forever.”

– Fulfillment: Solomon’s reign is the most secure and prosperous yet recorded, foreshadowing an eternal rule.

4. Same Divine Initiative

– Promise: “I will establish…” (repeated emphasis on God’s action)

– Fulfillment: “The LORD highly exalted Solomon…” (1 Chronicles 29:25)

Looking Beyond Solomon: The Greater Son

Solomon’s glory, though unmatched in his day, was temporary. Yet it points ahead to:

Isaiah 9:7 “Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end… on the throne of David.”

Luke 1:32-33 Gabriel’s announcement: Jesus “will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David… and His kingdom will never end.”

Solomon verifies God’s faithfulness in the short term; Christ guarantees it forever.
