How can you identify and follow godly examples in your community?

Scripture Focus: Philippians 3:17

“Join one another in following my example, brothers, and carefully observe those who walk according to the pattern we set for you.”

Spot the Pattern of Christlikeness

• Gospel-centered words and actions

• Humility that puts others first (Philippians 2:3–4)

• Consistent obedience whether seen or unseen

• Evident fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22–23)

Measure Everything by Scripture

Acts 17:11—“they received the word with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures daily.”

2 Timothy 3:16—Scripture equips for “every good work.”

• If a life or teaching contradicts the Word, it is not a pattern to follow.

Watch Their Walk Up Close

• Observe how they treat family, coworkers, waiters, adversaries.

• Look for steadiness in trials (James 1:2–4).

• Notice how they handle money, time, and praise.

Seek a Variety of Models

• Paul says “those” (plural); one person cannot display every grace.

• Older men and women (Titus 2:2–6), peers, even younger believers strong in a specific area.

Invite Interaction and Imitation

• Share meals, serve together, ask “Show me how you do that.”

Hebrews 13:7—“consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.”

• Let encouragement and gentle correction flow both ways (Proverbs 27:17).

Guard Against Counterfeits

Philippians 3:18–19 warns of many who “walk as enemies of the cross.”

• Red flags: self-promotion, earthly-mindedness, secretive behavior, teaching that flatters sin.

Grow into an Example Yourself

1 Corinthians 11:1—“Imitate me, as I imitate Christ.”

• Daily abide in the Word, pray, serve; others will naturally find a trustworthy pattern in you.
