Trust God, not the world—how?
How can we ensure our trust is in God, not worldly solutions?

The Scene in 2 Kings 3:13

“Elisha asked the king of Israel, ‘What do we have in common? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.’ ‘No,’ replied the king of Israel, ‘for it is the LORD who has summoned these three kings to deliver them into the hand of Moab.’ ”(BSB)

• King Jehoram had long relied on the idolatrous prophets of Ahab and Jezebel.

• When crisis struck, he tried to mix that worldly strategy with a last-minute appeal to the LORD through Elisha.

• Elisha’s blunt response exposed the folly of treating God as a backup plan rather than the first and only reliance.

Warning Against Worldly Counsel

• Worldly “solutions” promise quick fixes but leave us spiritually empty (Isaiah 31:1; Jeremiah 17:5).

• Divided trust breeds instability—“he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways” (James 1:8).

• The kings in 2 Kings 3 illustrate how compromise erodes confidence; they marched to war without seeking God, then panicked when water ran out.

Why God’s Way Is Better

• He alone is sovereign: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God” (Psalm 20:7).

• His guidance is always reliable: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5).

• His provision is perfect: when the kings finally submitted, God filled the valley with water (2 Kings 3:20) and granted victory.

Practical Steps to Anchor Our Trust in God

1. Daily Scripture Intake

– Let God’s Word shape instincts before crises hit (Psalm 119:105).

2. Prayerful Dependence

– Talk to Him first, not last; confess any tendency to self-reliance (Philippians 4:6-7).

3. Immediate Obedience

– Act on what He already revealed, as the armies dug ditches per Elisha’s word (2 Kings 3:16-18).

4. God-Centered Counsel

– Seek advisers who submit to Scripture, not cultural trends (Proverbs 15:22).

5. Remember Past Deliverances

– Recount answered prayers to reinforce present faith (Psalm 77:11-12).

Living It Out Today

• Before clicking “buy,” “google,” or “text,” pause and invite God’s wisdom.

• Measure every opinion—news, social media, professional advice—against Scripture.

• Celebrate small acts of faith; they train the heart to trust when the stakes rise.

• Keep Christ at the center: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).
