How can we trust God's sovereignty when "the floods have lifted up their voice"? The reality of roaring floods Psalm 93:3: “The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the seas lift up their pounding waves.” • The psalmist looks at waters that are literally surging and symbolically threatening every area of life—health, finances, relationships, culture. • The roar feels relentless and louder than anything else in the moment. God seated above the floods “The LORD reigns! He is robed in majesty… Your throne was established long ago; You are from all eternity… Above the roar of many waters—the mighty breakers of the sea—the LORD on high is majestic.” • His throne predates the first drop of water and outlasts every wave. • Sovereignty is not something He might lose when waters rise; it is who He is. Three anchors for our trust 1. His eternal reign cannot be moved – “The world indeed is firmly established; it cannot be moved.” (Psalm 93:1) – Cross-reference: Daniel 4:34–35; Revelation 1:8. 2. His power is greater than the loudest storm – “Above the roar of many waters…the LORD on high is majestic.” (Psalm 93:4) – Seen supremely when Jesus “rebuked the wind and the sea. ‘Silence! Be still!’” (Mark 4:39). 3. His word is utterly reliable – “Your testimonies are fully confirmed.” (Psalm 93:5) – Cross-reference: Isaiah 40:8; Joshua 21:45. Practical responses when waves crash • Remember His presence: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” (Isaiah 43:2) • Rehearse His promises aloud; they are louder than the sea. • Rest under His authority by yielding anxious thoughts to Him (Philippians 4:6–7). • Remain obedient; holiness “adorns Your house” (Psalm 93:5). Obedience is faith in action. • Reach out to believers; God often steadies us through His body (Hebrews 10:24–25). Closing encouragement Though the waters rise and their voice thunders, the throne of God stands higher, older, and stronger. He who rules the storm invites you to fix your eyes on Him, confident that no wave can overturn a kingdom—or a life—anchored in His sovereign care. |
