How can we trust God's timing in our lives, like David did here? Seeing David’s Example in 2 Samuel 3:21 “Then Abner said to David, ‘Let me go now and assemble all Israel for my lord the king, so that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires.’ So David dismissed Abner, and he went in peace.” (2 Samuel 3:21) • David had been anointed king years earlier (1 Samuel 16:13), yet only Judah recognized him at first (2 Samuel 2:3–4). • Abner’s pledge marked a turning point, but David still waited; he did not seize the throne by force, trusting God to finish what He began. • His calm dismissal of Abner—letting him “go in peace”—shows confidence that God, not human maneuvering, would complete the process. Why God’s Timing Can Be Trusted • God sees the whole picture. “Declaring the end from the beginning” (Isaiah 46:10). • His schedule is perfect. “He has made everything beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). • Delay is not denial. “For the vision awaits an appointed time… it will surely come; it will not delay” (Habakkuk 2:3). • His plans are good. “I know the plans I have for you… to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). • He proved it supremely in Christ. “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son” (Galatians 4:4). Practical Ways to Wait Well • Stay faithful in present assignments – David shepherded, served Saul, led men—never idle while waiting (1 Samuel 17–30). • Seek God continually – “David inquired of the LORD” before each major step (2 Samuel 2:1; 5:19). • Refuse shortcuts – Twice he spared Saul’s life (1 Samuel 24; 26), choosing obedience over expediency. • Show grace to others – He honored Abner’s overture and later mourned him (2 Samuel 3:32). • Anchor yourself in Scripture – “Your word is a lamp to my feet” (Psalm 119:105); David composed psalms while in caves. Encouraging Verses to Hold On To • “Wait for the LORD; be strong and courageous. Yes, wait for the LORD.” Psalm 27:14 • “My times are in Your hands.” Psalm 31:15 • “Those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength.” Isaiah 40:31 • “Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9 • “Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete.” James 1:4 What Waiting Produces in Us • Deeper dependence on God rather than self-effort. • Proven character and humility for future responsibility (Romans 5:3-4). • Clear testimony to others that God keeps His promises. • Greater joy when fulfillment finally arrives (Proverbs 13:12). Living Today with David’s Confidence Just as David trusted God’s timetable from the pasture to the palace, we can rest in the same sovereign Hand. Every promise in Scripture stands literal, reliable, and sure. When events stall or detours appear, remember: the God who scheduled David’s coronation schedules every detail of your life, and He never runs late. |
