How can we trust God when relocating, as Isaac did in Genesis 26:17? Looking at Isaac’s Move • “So Isaac departed from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar, where he settled.” (Genesis 26:17) • Isaac had just prospered in Gerar, yet opposition forced him out (vv. 12-16). Rather than panic, he simply “departed,” pitching his tents in the next place God opened. • His calm obedience shows that relocation does not cancel God’s promise; it often positions us to see it more clearly (cf. v. 3). Recognizing God’s Hand in Relocation • God initiates: He had already said, “Live in the land that I will tell you” (Genesis 26:2-3). • God guides: “The steps of a man are ordered by the LORD” (Psalm 37:23). • God protects: Even quarrels over wells could not stop Isaac’s progress (vv. 19-22). • God blesses: Each new well was a fresh confirmation of covenant favor (v. 24). Practical Steps for Trusting God During a Move • Stay in close fellowship with the Lord – “Trust in the LORD with all your heart… He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) • Ask for wisdom before making decisions – “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God… and it will be given.” (James 1:5) • Obey promptly, even when details are unclear – Isaac departed the same day Abimelech asked him to leave. • Keep worship central – Isaac built an altar at Beersheba (v. 25); worship guards the heart from anxiety. • Expect resistance but refuse to strive – Isaac yielded contested wells, trusting God to provide space (“Rehoboth,” v. 22). • Re-affirm God’s promises aloud – “Do not fear, for I am with you.” (Isaiah 41:10) Promises to Anchor Your Heart • Presence — “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5b) • Direction — “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.” (Psalm 32:8) • Courage — “Be strong and courageous… the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9) • Peace — “The peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds.” (Philippians 4:6-7) • Protection — “The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 121:8) Encouragement from Other Movers of Faith • Abraham left Ur “without knowing where he was going.” (Hebrews 11:8) • Jacob moved to Egypt under famine yet saw God’s provision (Genesis 46). • Israel followed the cloud and fire through the wilderness (Exodus 13:21-22). • Early believers scattered by persecution carried the gospel everywhere (Acts 8:1-4). Living It Out Today • Write down the specific promises God has highlighted; read them daily. • Surrender each logistic—housing, work, community—to His timing. • Keep relationships gracious; like Isaac, refuse to quarrel over “wells.” • Look for new ministry opportunities in the place God sends you; relocation often enlarges influence. • Celebrate each evidence of God’s faithfulness, just as Isaac named his wells. Trust grows when we treat every move as a stage in God’s unbroken story of provision. Where He sends, He stays—and where He stays, peace follows. |
