Psalm 121
1. The great safety of the godly, who put their trust in God's protection

The LORD will watch over your coming and going
This phrase emphasizes God's continual protection and care over every aspect of life. In biblical times, travel was often perilous due to the threat of bandits, wild animals, and harsh weather conditions. The assurance of divine protection would have been a great comfort to the Israelites. This concept of God watching over His people is echoed in other scriptures, such as Deuteronomy 31:6, where God promises never to leave nor forsake His people. The imagery of "coming and going" suggests the totality of life's journey, encompassing all daily activities and movements.

both now and forevermore
This part of the verse highlights the eternal nature of God's guardianship. It reassures believers that God's protection is not limited by time; it is both immediate and everlasting. This promise of perpetual care is consistent with God's unchanging nature, as seen in Malachi 3:6, where God declares, "I the LORD do not change." The phrase also points to the eternal security found in a relationship with God, a theme that is further developed in the New Testament, particularly in John 10:28-29, where Jesus speaks of giving eternal life to His followers, ensuring that no one can snatch them out of His hand.

Persons / Places / Events
1. The LORD (Yahweh)
The covenant name of God, emphasizing His eternal presence and faithfulness to His people.

2. The Psalmist
Traditionally attributed to King David, though the specific author of Psalm 121 is not definitively known. The psalmist expresses trust in God's protection.

3. Israel
The nation to whom the psalmist originally writes, representing God's chosen people who look to Him for help and protection.

4. Pilgrimage to Jerusalem
This psalm is part of the "Songs of Ascents," traditionally sung by pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem for the feasts, symbolizing a journey of faith.

5. The Journey
Represents the daily life and spiritual journey of believers, encompassing all aspects of "coming and going."
Teaching Points
God's Omnipresence
God's watchful care is not limited by time or space. He is present in every aspect of our lives, ensuring our safety and guidance.

Eternal Security
The promise of God's protection "both now and forevermore" assures believers of their eternal security in Him, providing comfort and peace.

Daily Trust
Believers are encouraged to trust God with their daily activities, knowing that He is intimately involved in their "coming and going."

Pilgrimage of Faith
Life is a spiritual journey, and like the pilgrims to Jerusalem, we are to rely on God's guidance and protection throughout our journey.

God's Faithfulness
Reflect on God's past faithfulness as a foundation for trusting Him with the future, reinforcing our confidence in His promises.(8) Thy going out and thy coming in.--A common Hebrew expression to denote the whole of life. (See Deuteronomy 28:6, &c; comp. St. Paul's prayer, 1Thessalonians 5:23.)

Verse 8. - The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in (comp. Deuteronomy 28:6; 1 Samuel 29:6; 2 Samuel 3:25; 1 Kings 3:7; 2 Kings 19:27). The phrase is an equivalent of "The Lord shall preserve thee in all thy ways" (Psalm 91:11). From this time forth, and even forevermore; i.e. so long as thou hast "goings out" and "comings in." But the phrase used rather implies that these will never cease.
