How can we trust God's provision in our lives, as seen in Joshua 21:11? Setting the Scene “ ‘Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron)—Arba was the forefather of Anak—in the hill country of Judah, along with the pasturelands surrounding it.’ ” (Joshua 21:11) What’s Going On in Joshua 21? • Israel has conquered the land, and each tribe is receiving its inheritance. • The Levites, who serve in worship and teaching, receive no large territory (Joshua 13:33) but are given forty-eight towns spread throughout Israel (Numbers 35:2-8). • Hebron, an honored city won earlier by Caleb (Joshua 14:12–14), is now assigned to the Levites along with its fertile pasturelands—tangible, daily provision for their families and livestock. God’s Provision on Display 1. Practical needs met – Pasturelands ensured food and income. – Spread-out cities meant every Israelite community had spiritual servants close by. 2. Promises kept – God had already commanded these towns in Numbers 35; now He fulfills that word. – Joshua 21 ends with the summary: “Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel failed; everything was fulfilled.” (v. 45) 3. Value honored – Hebron was prime real estate, yet God required His people to release the best for His priests (cf. Proverbs 3:9). 4. Worship sustained – Levites could focus on ministry because God secured their livelihood through the generosity He ordained in the law (Deuteronomy 12:19). Why This Matters for Us Today • Same character, same care – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) • Provision anchored in promise – “And my God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19) • Community channels God’s supply – As Israel supplied Levites, God often meets our needs through other believers (Acts 2:44–45). • Generosity reflects trust – Releasing what seems valuable—just as Judah ceded Hebron—demonstrates faith that God replenishes (Luke 6:38). Markers of Trust in God’s Provision • Remember His past faithfulness (Psalm 77:11). • Hold resources with open hands, ready to receive and to give. • Put obedience ahead of security, knowing God fills the gaps (Matthew 6:33). • Cultivate gratitude; thankfulness keeps the focus on the Giver, not the gift (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Living It Out Right Now – List concrete instances where God has already met needs—financial, relational, spiritual. – Identify one “Hebron” you’re tempted to cling to; offer it back to Him in stewardship. – Support those who serve the gospel: “The Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.” (1 Corinthians 9:14) – Rest, repeating David’s testimony: “I have been young and now am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.” (Psalm 37:25) God provided Hebron’s green hills for the Levites; He will not forget you. Trust Him, obey Him, and watch His promises stand just as firm today. |
