How can we apply Joshua's response to our own complaints or doubts? Setting the Scene “Then the sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua and said, ‘Why have you given us only one allotment and one portion as an inheritance? We are a numerous people because the LORD has blessed us abundantly.’ ” (Joshua 17:14) Joshua answers in v. 15: “ ‘If you are so numerous, go up into the forest and clear ground for yourselves…’ ” What Joshua Does—and Doesn’t Do • He listens to their concern without rebuke. • He affirms their identity (“numerous people” v. 17). • He redirects them from complaint to action: clear the forest, occupy the hill country, drive out the Canaanites. • He shows confidence that God’s promise is still valid (v. 18). Timeless Lessons for Our Own Complaints or Doubts 1. Remember God’s Blessing First • The people confess, “the LORD has blessed us abundantly.” • Psalm 103:2—“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and do not forget all His benefits.” • Gratitude reshapes perspective before problems dominate. 2. Accept Personal Responsibility • Joshua refuses to do their work for them. • Proverbs 14:23—“There is profit in all labor, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” • When we encounter shortage, God may be inviting us to engage, not to excuse. 3. Act on the Promise You Already Have • The land is theirs by covenant (Joshua 1:3); the forest merely needs clearing. • James 2:17—faith that never swings an axe is “dead.” • Instead of waiting for ideal conditions, take the next obedient step. 4. Face Obstacles with Courage, Not Excuses • Iron chariots (v. 18) look intimidating, yet Joshua says, “You can drive them out.” • Joshua 1:9—“Be strong and courageous… the LORD your God is with you.” • Complaints focus on obstacles; courage focuses on God’s presence. 5. Replace Grumbling with Constructive Words • Philippians 2:14—“Do everything without complaining or arguing.” • Speak solutions, not just problems; encourage others to trust and obey. Clearing Our Own Forests Today • Crowded schedule? Prune distractions so there’s room for God’s calling. • Lingering sin? Cut it down with confession and accountability (1 John 1:9). • Fear of opposition? Sharpen faith with Scripture and fellowship (Romans 10:17). • Lack of wisdom? Ask generously from God (James 1:5), then act on what He shows. Encouragement for the Journey • God’s promises are already deeded to us in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). • Our role is to trust, obey, and work them out in daily life. • When complaints or doubts rise, remember Joshua’s pattern: acknowledge blessing, accept responsibility, and move forward in faith. |
