Use spies' tactics in spiritual battles?
How can we apply the spies' mission strategy to our spiritual battles?

Setting the Scene

Joshua 2:1: “Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men as spies from Shittim, saying, ‘Go and see the land, especially Jericho.’ So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and lodged there.”

The Mission’s Core Principles

• Secrecy: Joshua acted “secretly,” shielding the plan from unnecessary exposure (cf. Matthew 6:6).

• Specific Targeting: “Especially Jericho” shows focus on the strongest obstacle first.

• Trusted Messengers: Two faithful men, not a large crowd, underscore quality over quantity (cf. 2 Timothy 2:2).

• Dependence on Providence: God prepared Rahab before the spies arrived (Isaiah 65:24).

• Immediate Obedience: They “went” the moment they were commissioned (James 1:22).

From Physical Recon to Spiritual Recon

1. Know the battlefield.

Ephesians 6:12: we wrestle “against spiritual forces of evil,” not mere circumstances.

– Pray and discern where the enemy is attacking—your mind, relationships, habits.

2. Identify strongholds.

– Jericho represents entrenched patterns.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5: “the weapons of our warfare... demolish strongholds.”

3. Gather intelligence.

– Study Scripture for the enemy’s tactics (Genesis 3; Matthew 4).

– Ask the Spirit to expose lies (John 16:13).

4. Move quietly.

– Private fasting, confession, and accountability before going public (Psalm 139:23-24).

5. Rely on unexpected allies.

– God may use unlikely people or circumstances—just as Rahab sheltered the spies (Philippians 1:12).

Practical Steps for Today

• Set aside “secret” time daily for reconnaissance—Word and prayer tuned to current battles.

• List specific Jerichos (fear, bitterness, lust, unbelief). Tackle them one at a time, not in vague generalities.

• Recruit a trusted believer or two for mutual reporting and encouragement.

• Watch for God-sent “Rahabs” who offer counsel, resources, or perspective you did not anticipate.

• Act promptly on what God shows—don’t let insight sit idle. Obedience cements victory (Luke 11:28).

Promises That Fuel Confidence

• “The LORD your God Himself will fight for you” (Deuteronomy 3:22).

• “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

• “In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37).

Closing Reflection

The spies’ mission teaches that strategic, Spirit-led preparation precedes every triumph. When we quietly seek God, focus on specific strongholds, and obey without delay, Jerichos fall and God’s promises advance in our lives.

What does Joshua 2:1 teach about God's use of unexpected people for His purposes?
