What challenges are your Anakim?
What obstacles in your life resemble the "Anakim" Caleb faced?

The Original Challenge Caleb Embraced

“Now therefore give me this hill country of which the LORD spoke on that day, for you heard on that day that the Anakim were there with great fortified cities. Perhaps the LORD will be with me, and I will drive them out, as the LORD has spoken.” (Joshua 14:12)

Modern Giants That Echo the Anakim

• Persistent doubt that whispers, “God’s promises are true for others but not for you.”

• Anxiety or depression that feels as immovable as a walled city.

• Addictions and secret sins towering like giants in the heart.

• Family fractures—strained marriages, prodigal children, generational patterns.

• Financial mountains: job loss, overwhelming debt, uncertain future.

• Cultural pressure to compromise biblical convictions in school, workplace, or social media.

• Physical illness or chronic pain that intimidates with daily reminders of weakness.

• Spiritual lethargy—apathy that dulls hunger for God’s presence.

Why These Obstacles Intimidate

• They appear larger than life, just as the Anakim dwarfed ordinary warriors.

• They fortify themselves with years of entrenched habits or deep-rooted fears.

• They mock God’s promises, suggesting He cannot—or will not—deliver.

• They exhaust human strength, pushing us to acknowledge our need for divine intervention.

How Caleb’s Example Guides Our Response

• Remember God’s Word: Caleb clung to the exact promise spoken at Kadesh-barnea (Joshua 14:9).

• Refuse to age out of faith: At eighty-five, Caleb still sought fresh battles (Joshua 14:10-11).

• Speak faith aloud: “Give me this hill country” declared trust before victory appeared.

• Advance in obedience: Caleb didn’t wait for the Anakim to vacate; he moved toward them.

• Credit the outcome to the LORD: “Perhaps the LORD will be with me” kept dependence clear.

Scriptures That Arm Us for the Battle

• “For with You I can charge against a troop, and with my God I can scale a wall.” (Psalm 18:29)

• “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)

• “The weapons of our warfare are not the weapons of the world. Instead, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” (2 Corinthians 10:4)

• “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God…” (Ephesians 6:10-11)

• “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised.” (James 1:12)

Moving Forward in Victory

Identify the giant, recall a specific promise, and step forward as Caleb did. Obstacles may loom like Anakim, but they fall before the God who never breaks His word.
