What do cows teach us about obedience?
What can we learn about obedience from the actions of the cows?

Setting the Scene

1 Samuel 6 records the Philistines sending the ark of the covenant back to Israel. Verse 10 describes their preparation:

“So the men did this, and took two milk cows and hitched them to the cart, and penned up their calves.”

The Cows’ Unlikely Assignment

• Two milk cows—freshly calved, never yoked—were chosen.

• Maternal instinct would normally keep them near their calves.

• Yet, once hitched, they headed straight toward Beth-shemesh, lowing as they went (v. 12), never turning aside.

What Obedience Looks Like

• Willing submission to an unfamiliar yoke

– “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me.” (Matthew 11:29)

• Immediate response despite natural pulls

– The cows left their calves; obedience outranked instinct.

• Steady, unwavering direction

– “If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best of the land.” (Isaiah 1:19)

• Testimony before onlookers

– Philistine lords followed behind; the cows’ obedience became a witness.

Key Lessons for Us

1. Obedience may defy personal preference or natural inclination.

2. God equips even the unlikely (untrained cows) to carry out His purpose.

3. True obedience stays on course until the assignment is complete.

4. Our obedience can lead others to acknowledge God’s power, just as the Philistines did.

Supporting Scriptures

John 10:27 — “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.”

Deuteronomy 13:4 — “You are to follow the LORD your God and fear Him. Keep His commandments… obey His voice; serve Him and hold fast to Him.”

1 Kings 8:61 — “Let your heart be wholly devoted to the LORD our God, to walk in His statutes and to keep His commandments, as at this day.”

Practical Takeaways

• Examine areas where instinct or comfort resists God’s call.

• Trust that the Lord’s yoke, though unfamiliar, is purposeful and guided.

• Commit to a straight path, resisting detours, until God’s task is finished.
