What does 1 John 1:5 mean?
What is the meaning of 1 John 1:5?

And this is the message we have heard from Him

John is not sharing second-hand information; he is passing on what he personally “heard from Him,” the Lord Jesus.

• The apostles were eyewitnesses and ear-witnesses of Christ’s teaching (Acts 4:20; Hebrews 2:3–4).

• The same God who spoke through the prophets has now spoken “to us by His Son” (Hebrews 1:2).

• Because the source is God Himself, the message carries absolute authority and reliability—truth we can receive with full confidence.

and announce to you

John refuses to hoard the truth; he proclaims it.

• Obedience to Christ includes declaring what we have received (Matthew 28:19–20).

• The pattern is multiplication: “What you have heard from me… entrust to faithful men” (2 Timothy 2:2).

• God’s message is designed for public light, not private storage (Mark 4:21–22).

God is light

A breathtaking, concise description of God’s nature.

• Light reveals, guides, and gives life. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12).

• In creation, light was God’s first spoken word, reflecting His own character (Genesis 1:3–4).

• “In Him was life, and that life was the light of men” (John 1:4–5).

• Light also symbolizes absolute purity: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights” (James 1:17).

and in Him there is no darkness at all

John doubles the negative for emphasis—zero darkness, not even a hint.

• Darkness represents sin, error, and death (Ephesians 5:8, 11). None of these can be found in God.

• “Your eyes are too pure to look on evil” (Habakkuk 1:13).

• God “alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light” (1 Timothy 6:16).

• Because God is utterly holy, fellowship with Him requires walking in the light (1 John 1:6–7).

summary

1 John 1:5 declares that the God who has revealed Himself through Jesus Christ is pure, radiant light, utterly free from any darkness. The apostles received this truth directly from the Lord and faithfully pass it on so we might live in transparent, holy fellowship with Him.

Why is joy emphasized in 1 John 1:4 instead of other virtues?
