What does Isaiah 31:2 mean?
What is the meaning of Isaiah 31:2?

Yet He too is wise

Isaiah has been warning Judah not to lean on Egypt for help (Isaiah 31:1). In contrast to human schemes, God’s wisdom stands unrivaled. He sees every angle of a situation and knows the surest path to righteousness and rescue.

Job 12:13 affirms, “With God are wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are His.”

Romans 11:33 praises the depth of God’s wisdom that no creature can fully trace.

Because of this perfect wisdom, His guidance is never flawed, and His judgments are always right. When He tells His people to rely on Him alone, it is not a suggestion—it is the only truly wise course.

and brings disaster

God’s wisdom is inseparable from His sovereignty. When His people rebel or when nations persecute the innocent, His wisdom moves Him to act in judgment as well as blessing.

Amos 3:6 asks, “If calamity comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it?” reminding us that no disaster is random.

Isaiah 45:7 declares that the LORD “forms light and creates darkness … brings prosperity and creates calamity.”

For Judah, trusting Egypt would invite the very disaster they hoped to avoid. The chastening hand of God is as purposeful as His saving hand, always aimed at turning hearts back to Him.

He does not call back His words

When God speaks, His declaration is final. Nothing can overturn it, and He never needs to revise it.

Numbers 23:19 states, “God is not a man, that He should lie … Does He speak and not act?”

Isaiah 55:11 promises that His word “will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I please.”

Whether the word is a promise of deliverance or a warning of judgment, God’s people can rest—and tremble—knowing that every syllable will come to pass exactly as spoken.

He will rise up against the house of the wicked and against the allies of evildoers

Judah hoped Egypt’s cavalry would save them from Assyria, yet God says He Himself will oppose any coalition built on rebellion or unbelief.

Proverbs 11:21 cautions, “Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will escape.”

Isaiah 13:11 assures that God “will punish the world for its evil.”

Allies united in injustice share the same fate. God is not neutral; He actively confronts wickedness, whether in foreign armies or in His own covenant people when they stray. Trusting in human strength instead of the Holy One invites His resistance (James 4:6).

summary

Isaiah 31:2 underscores four firm realities: God’s wisdom surpasses every human strategy; His sovereignty means He both blesses and brings disaster as justice requires; His spoken word is irrevocable; and His righteous judgment targets all wicked alliances. For Judah—and for believers today—the safest place is humble, obedient trust in the Lord alone, confident that His wise plans and unbreakable promises will stand forever.
