What does Proverbs 10:27 mean?
What is the meaning of Proverbs 10:27?

The fear of the LORD

“The fear of the LORD…” (Proverbs 10:27)

• This is not a paralyzing dread but a reverent awe that recognizes God’s holiness, authority, and loving care.

Proverbs 1:7 reminds us, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge”, showing that this attitude is foundational to wise living.

Psalm 34:9–10 assures, “Fear the LORD, you His saints, for those who fear Him lack nothing”. Reverence positions us under God’s protection and provision.

Exodus 20:20 records Moses’ words: “Do not be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that the fear of Him will be with you to keep you from sinning”. A healthy fear steers us away from destructive choices.

Prolongs life

“…prolongs life” (Proverbs 10:27)

• God often rewards obedience with tangible blessing, and length of days is one of His stated rewards (Deuteronomy 5:33).

Proverbs 3:1–2 echoes, “My son, do not forget my teaching… for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity”.

Ephesians 6:2–3 ties honoring parents to longevity: “so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on the earth”.

• Obedience generally fosters healthier habits—avoiding immorality, substance abuse, violence—which naturally extends life. Yet even when believers die young, eternal life is assured (John 11:25–26), so the promise ultimately stretches into eternity.

But the years of the wicked

“…but the years of the wicked…” (Proverbs 10:27)

• “Wicked” describes those who reject God’s authority. Psalm 1:4–5 pictures them as chaff blown away in judgment.

Proverbs 4:19 notes, “The way of the wicked is like deep darkness”; their path is unstable and perilous.

• Their rebellion often drags them into violence, addiction, hatred—choices that corrode both body and soul.

Will be cut short

“…will be cut short” (Proverbs 10:27)

Psalm 55:23 warns, “You, O God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction; men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days”.

Job 21:13 observes that the godless “spend their days in prosperity and go down to Sheol in peace,” yet that peace is deceptive—their abrupt end awaits.

Proverbs 11:19 states, “He who is steadfast in righteousness attains life, but he who pursues evil brings death upon himself”.

• Whether through natural consequences, divine judgment, or eternal separation from God, a life set against Him is inevitably shortened.

summary

Reverent awe of the LORD sets us on a path of wisdom that typically lengthens and enriches our days, while rebellion shortens life and forfeits blessing. The verse calls us to cultivate a heart that honors God, trusting that He holds both our present span and our eternal future.
