What does Psalm 103:2 mean?
What is the meaning of Psalm 103:2?

Bless the LORD

“Bless the LORD” is a call to praise, admire, and exalt God for who He is. Scripture shows this isn’t a suggestion but a fitting response to His character. David’s heart echoes Psalm 34:1, “I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise will always be on my lips,” reminding us that praise flows from recognition of God’s unwavering goodness (Psalm 145:3). The word “bless” here means to speak well of the LORD, to recount His greatness like Moses did in Exodus 15:2 after crossing the Red Sea.

O my soul

David turns the spotlight inward, addressing his own soul—the seat of thoughts, emotions, and will. By talking to himself, he models intentional worship, the same inward resolve we see in Lamentations 3:21–24: “Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope… great is Your faithfulness.” Psalm 42:5 likewise shows the psalmist urging his discouraged soul toward hope in God. This self-address guards against empty lip service and moves praise from mere formality to heartfelt devotion.

and do not forget

Forgetting God’s works is a recurring human weakness. Deuteronomy 4:9 warns, “Only be on guard and diligently watch yourselves, so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen.” Israel’s wilderness story (Psalm 106:7) proves how quickly gratitude can fade. David counters spiritual amnesia by calling his soul to active remembrance, knowing that deliberate recall of God’s acts strengthens faith (Joshua 4:6–7).

all His kind deeds—

The list is endless: forgiveness (Psalm 103:3), healing, redemption, loving-kindness, and compassion (Psalm 103:4). Each “kind deed” points to God’s covenant love that culminates in Christ’s salvation (Ephesians 1:7). Isaiah 63:7 voices the same thought: “I will make known the LORD’s loving devotion and His praiseworthy acts.” Counting these mercies turns the heart from self-focus to worship and fuels obedience born of gratitude (Romans 12:1).

summary

Psalm 103:2 invites every believer to stir up wholehearted praise by (1) fixing on God’s greatness, (2) speaking truth to one’s own soul, (3) actively resisting spiritual forgetfulness, and (4) rehearsing every demonstration of His covenant love. Remembered mercies become fresh motivation to bless the LORD today and always.
