What does Psalm 89:35 mean?
What is the meaning of Psalm 89:35?

Once and for all

God speaks with absolute finality.

• This is not a tentative word; it is a covenant sealed forever, echoing 2 Samuel 7:16 where David is told, “Your house and your kingdom will endure before Me forever.”

Psalm 105:8 echoes the same certainty: “He remembers His covenant forever, the word He commanded for a thousand generations”.

• Because the Lord’s purposes are unchanging (Isaiah 46:10), there is no expiration date on what He promises.

I have sworn

When God swears, He binds Himself—something He does sparingly and only to underscore the unbreakable nature of a promise.

Genesis 22:16 records a similar oath to Abraham: “By Myself I have sworn.”

Hebrews 6:17–18 clarifies why God does this: “God desired to show the unchangeable nature of His purpose… it is impossible for God to lie”. The oath is not for His benefit but for ours, giving strong encouragement to all who trust Him.

Psalm 132:11 returns to David: “The LORD has sworn to David a sure oath from which He will not turn back.”

by My holiness

God stakes the promise on His own character.

• Holiness is who He is (Isaiah 6:3). To swear “by My holiness” means failure would require God to cease being God—an impossibility.

Amos 4:2 shows the same formula: “The Lord GOD has sworn by His holiness.”

• Because His holiness is perfect, the promise is perfectly secure (1 Peter 1:16; “Be holy, because I am holy,”).

I will not lie to David

The Lord’s truthfulness guarantees the covenant.

Numbers 23:19 affirms, “God is not a man, that He should lie.”

Titus 1:2 echoes, “God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.”

• David himself rested on this: “Lord GOD, You are God; Your words are true” (2 Samuel 7:28).

• Therefore, every facet of the Davidic covenant—including the everlasting throne fulfilled in Christ (Luke 1:32–33)—is certain.

summary

Psalm 89:35 stacks certainties on top of each other: God has spoken once for all, backed the promise with an oath, anchored it in His own holiness, and sealed it with His truthfulness. Nothing can nullify the covenant with David, ultimately fulfilled in Jesus, the eternal King.
